We will only know once we receive the OPs "humming" audio clip, and have studied it.

If it's out of gas, it has a leak, which may be difficult to identify and repair (with no warranty). If the compressor has been running constantly, it is likely to be overheating, and probably damaged.

IMHO trying to give advice in this kind of case is not really helpful...

Sort of true, I've had a leak fixed, he just used a small portable compressor and some dish soap all over the lines, leak was at a join to the radiator, he brazed it, refilled gas and cleaned everything for R800

Was an old fridge though.

If the leak is very tiny they use something else they pump through the system, some paraffin based liquid I think, that may be more expensive.
 
I was looking what new fridges are available just in case, my current fridge is 86cm and the maximum size I can fit is a 90cm.

I see that all the similar capacity (~550L) are over 90cm.

Newer fridges have a higher energy efficiency rating. This means that the insulation walls and doors are thicker. The same external dimensions will have a smaller internal volume.
 
If the compressor is running constantly then it is either out of refrigerant or the thermostat is not switching off or on anymore.

If the thermostat is not switching off and there is still enough gas, the evaporator plate will freeze up because the compressor is running constantly. If the evaporator plate is forming small drops or you see plenty of water leaking then it might be the refrigerant. Water runs down from the evaporator down to a small bucket on top of the compressor. The heat from the compressor evaporates the water.

Fixing leaks on the newer fridges are more difficult because of the insulation. I think LG and Samsung uses their own compressors.

I will maybe first ask a technician to have a look and make a proper diagnosis. Then you can make a decision on what to do.

I actually took this 550L fridge because of its big freezer, I could just have one freezer and get rid of the chest freezer. Always felt that I used hoard things in the chest freezer just for the sake of it.

Long term that decision paid for itself multiple times in terms of the amount on power I've saved, although it required some strategic packing at times, I've never had a problem of not having enough space.

Wonder if there is something you can place between packages to keep them from welding to one another.
 
Local fridge repair people are coming by tomorrow. I called the LG Service Centre, according to them to fix the fridge would cost over R4K, if it was the compressor.
