Friend of mine got a quote from comp mania for some parts since he wants to upgrade his pc. Looked at the prices and thought they were'nt that good so told him i try find better parts for him.

Comp Mania specs:
K9N SLi Platinum m/board - R 1399
amd 64 X2 5200+ - R 1499
MegaTek Gaming Chassis - R 449
460W Gigabyte PSU - R 429
2GB DDR 800 - R 499

My alternative: ( spoke to him and asked if he would really use the SLi feature since it seems mobo's with SLi are alot more $$$ than those without so plus he could save some money if he wont use it so my mobo is different and hope some will agree for it being a good choice )

My choice:
Asus M2A-VM HDMI mobo - R 736
AMD 64 X2 5200+ - R 1195
iSonic 930 Atx chassis ( w/400w PSU ) - R 548

Can't find cheaper ram than the one on the quote so he'll get it there. Also how good is that onboard graphics card... specs are:
ATI Radeon X1250 ( max 1024MB shared )

At the moment the gfx card he was gonna use is his bro's old GeForce 7300LE so i was thinking for the money saving, he gets himself another 2GB ram and have 1GB shared to his card and he still wont have memory shortages.

How would that card handle assasins creed as this is really his benchmark for gaming and the recom specs for the game is a 512MB gfx card so i was thinking 1024MB shared onboard would be sufficient.

Any ideas and/or changes which would be more apprpriate?

Thanks

edit: he would also be looking at possible over-clocking of the mobo and cpu

Why AMD? Intel kicks AMD butt. :p

PM me if you want a quote from Rectron. Will be cheaper. I only add on a bit for the service.

onboard graphics will not run assassin's creed

assassin's creeds need 7800gtx minimum to run

your friends need to buy a 3850/9600gt to have any decent chance of playing assassin's creed

I agree with killadoob, onboard graphics will not be able to handle that game smoothly at any decent resolution. Have a look at getting a GeForce 9600GT, it seems to be the best price/performance card available right now.

Price needs to to stay below the R4500 bracket for the mobo cpu, case, psu and memory so 9600gt will prob be out the question.

The Asus motherboard you mentioned is a little limited in terms of expansion capabilities. ie when you want to upgrade your RAM of CPU you will have problems and might need to replace the mb....

4500 is not enough money to run a system that will play assassin's creed

go buy an xbox for 2.5 rather, assassin's creed will run like a dream

ok then if not assasins creed, then what about cod4 or bf? he can always buy a gfx card when he has that money lying around but at the moment he just wants to upgrade his machine to something better

i doubt that onboard vga will run bf 2 or cod4

you could run those games on a 8400gs or something

No, no it isn't, fact.

So you'll choose a system that is worse just because you're a fan!? What has AMD ever done for you?

yup all amd has done is rip you off when they have had a better product, then intel release a better product and all of sudden amd can cut prices by 60%

it must suck being loyal to company that rip you off one year and then beg you for business the next year

be loyal to your friends and family, not to a cpu company that has done nothing for you

Well its just like cellphones. Some swear by nokia, even though some of their phones are real shyte compared to others on the market but that doesnt stop those people from supporting them.

I for one have never had a problem with an amd cpu. I also don't require such heavy processing where comparing an amd dual core and an intel dual core is of a vital importance. Everything boils down to a decent price and imo intel don't take this very seriously.

AMD also have been known to run at cooler temperatures compared to intel. Intel probably concentrates more on clock speeds and performance than anything else whereas amd have a more all round approach to designing a cpu , probably causing the lack in performance. This is all really my opinion and anyone is welcome to challenge it.

You can easily achieve a 80-100% overclock on a Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160, on stock cooling non the less, and will kill even the 5200+ X2 or whateva Amd has to offer in the same range....For under R600 bucks i think thats dam good..Show me one AMD that will even come close to doing the same thing Please
