Hey guys,

I think lightning struck my PC over the weekend, my onboard network card is not responding so I switched to the USB connection on my modem. Since doing that my connection is WAY slower than it used to be. Could it be that the lightning damaged my modem also?

I wouldn't want to spend R1000 on a new modem if not entirely necessary. Any advice?

I agree start with a NIC, they are cheaper... so i would start with the problem solving here

I've had 2 lightning hits this year alone and from other past experience I'd say that when your router is hit, it's toast. So, if you're getting action out of the router now, it's more than likely ok.

Then again, I have had one lightning hit before where the lan ports were fried but the wireless capability on the router was left intact. (this blew all NICs on the network as well).

Either way, as mentioned, install a NIC and you'll see where you stand because guaranteed your onboard is history. If you get the NIC working in device manager but no LED between router and NIC, your router is most likely damaged.

Thanks for the feedback guys, will try it out and let you know what transpires.
