anyone used both? which is better in terms of cost, ease of use, functionality ...thanx

But how much would it cost you if you using normal 3g on your phone and can you call people without fring using fring?

Slightly off topic but ...The rates in SA are alot better with lowratevoip.com which is another voipbuster type site. 1c euro a min to land line and 9c euro per min to cell. voipbuster has not got as many free options as LRV now. Im a former VB user. You can use the similar sip settings from voipbuster as the main company betamax supplies them all the same functionality.

Style

Yeah, their style is to open another clone company with cheaper rates get people using it, the raise prices, open another clone, and so on...

I use it to call Italy only, it's free, not much justification to move...

SIP over GPRS

Any one has an experience call quality on open source sip client(like fring,Yeigo) call over T-mobile "Sidekick® Data" network in USA ?

Is there any unlimited high speed data provider for SIP call over GPRS in USA ?

Thanks a lot!

Used Net limiter to track bandwidth on fring

And work out around R6 an hour on googletalk VOIP

A friend of mine talked to me for 10-15min using Fring and it cost him just over R4.

Buy a 3G phone with a SIP telephone installed e.g N95. There are quite a few available. Pricing varies fro about R 2300.00 upwards or free on most mobile packages. Quality is vastly better than Yeigo or Fring. Just find a voip provider that has vast band width and one who uses fibre optic lines for connectivity to the telecoms networks and your call quality is brilliant. Visit [LINK REMOVED] for top quality voip rates and services.

I have recently upgraded to an E71, which qualifies as a SIP telephone. However, I have never used VOIP before not even on my PC, so do not understand exactly what I need to do to activate VOIP and start making VOIP calls. I have read about Fring, and they have a specific download for the E71. But then do I need a VOIP provider in addition? How do I find / decide on such? Do I need Fring (or similar) at all? E71 comes with a link to download Gizmo. Seems to be similar to Fring. Have downloaded but not registered. Have come across the VoipBuster website, but I do not see South Africa listed on "free calls" - or is free calls not relevant?

It is possible that my simple start-up questions are answered somewhere on this forum - have searched and this thread one of my early reads and decided to stop here. Please re-direct me if need be.

Thank you.

I agree with RitchieR. SIP directly off the Nokia E-series (and most newer N-series) gives much better quality then Fring.

You may ask "But isn't Fring a SIP client anyway?"
The simple answer is No. It uses a proprietery protocol to talk to the nearest Fring server (for us, that's on the IS network), and then relays the call as SIP from there.
This introduces extra latency and packet loss, not to mention raising privacy concerns.

The Nokia client talks SIP directly from your phone via the 3G network to your SIP provider.

Example for Switch Telecom. You can adjust the relevent settings for your ITSP.

Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> SIP Settings

Options -> Add new -> Use default profile

Profile name: Switch Telecom
Service profile: IETF
Default access point: MTN 123data (or whatever your 3G connection is called)
Public user name: sip: [email protected]
Use compression: no
Registration: Always on
Use security: no
Proxy server -> (leave all default settings "None")
Registrar server -> Registrar serv. addr.: sip:sip.switchtel.co.za
Registrar server -> Realm: switchtel.co.za
Registrar server -> User name: 087550xxxx
Registrar server -> Password: ***
Registrar server -> Transport type: Auto
Registrar server -> Port: 5060

Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Internet tel. Settings

Options -> New Profile

Name: Switch Telecom
SIP Profiles: Switch Telecom
