A Congolese car guard, who is also a qualified maths teacher, has been given an assistant teacher's post at the Sunward Park High School in Paarl, in the Western Cape, according to a report on Thursday.

Fernando Brice Olivier Ogadi, 35, left the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2004 to escape political upheaval and came to South Africa.

Ogadi, a passionate maths teacher, worked as a car guard in the parking lot of the Zomerlust Spar in Paarl, Beeld newspaper reported.

He put up a rudimentary blackboard and would enthusiastically explain mathematical equations to any shoppers who cared to listen.

“If somebody is so passionate about something that he's prepared to leave his country for it, he deserves to be helped,” said Sunward Park headmistress Ansie Peens.

“Not everybody has the ability to explain maths, but his method is quite unique,” she said.

Ogadi started his new job on Monday morning, and has been given accommodation in the boarding school, where he offers extra classes and tuition in the afternoons. – Sapa

A feel-good story :)

Awesome feel good story, Great on him and i wish him all the success in the world, as he seems prepared to work hard for it.

Clearly he is not South African, because all we hear these days are "I want, I demand, VIVA !!!!''

"I want, I demand, VIVA !!!!''

Don't think we'll ever get away from this mentality, work is hard so a No No here in SA.

On one hand, we have people complaining about the falling standard of education, which is largely due to the lack of good South African teachers.

On the other, we have qualified foreigners (who are African) who are forced to work as car guards because of all the legal red tape.

Good lord...

Wow that's awesome. Great to hear that things are finally working out for him! I admit to being guilty of taking some of these guys for granted without having a clue about about their backgrounds.

BIG yawn, as in the other thread.
Its not from car guard to maths teacher.
Its from unemployed refugee maths teacher to employed maths teacher, oooooo wow, BFD.
sorry state of affairs if every time a refugee gets employed we have to make a news story about it and two threads in mybb.

It beats some of the [-]adverts[/-] news on MyBB

I suck at maths, maybe I should goto him for extra lessons... I can't understand why people get upset when I say that 1 - 1 is a bloody rugby post.
