HI all

I have been with sentech, using the 128k (or should we just call it the 128) option for two years and a few months now. I switched over to ADSL 192k today. And man, what a huge difference. And much cheaper. In total I am now paying R435 for great browsing,(instead of R640 odd) ITS MUCH FASTER, TAKE MY WORD FOR IT........ I was gettting higher speeds using my cellphone on GPRS than i got with sentech(most of the time). Seroiusly , what is the point opf having an "unlimited" cap with sentech, when it takes two decades to download a GB.

This dark cloud , called sentech has been hanging over my shoulders for just over two years( bad contract) ...... And I feel lighter, refreshed and just plain happy to get rid of it.

Sure my telkom line took 3 and a half months to install but. Its all worth it for the feeling I got today.

SENTECH TRULY SUCKS!!!!!!!! I BEEN WITH THEM FROM THE BEGINNING.
Seriously save your pc, save your sanity, save your family and move on to something else. I-burst is also Leagues ahead of sentech.

:D :) :D :)

I have done the opposite. I recently changed from 192k ADSL to 182k MyWireless.

And I have to say the difference in speed is astonishing. MyWireless is much faster for almost everything. Maybe you had a congested tower?

I downloaded an Ubuntu iso using bittorrent. What a pleasure. Unshaped and uncapped. It took much, much faster and I didn't have to worry about being capped.

iTunes Music Store downloads also seem much faster.

As for price.
ADSL = R560 (R90 + R270 + R200)
+ R75 per gig extra I use, which happened quite often
MyWireless = R499

Well thats just talking about being shaped or not, that actual speeds are apparently much worse on Sentech, and shaping is something that can be overcome.

It also doesnt affect DC++,browsing, mail, or internet downloads, all of which Im shure 192kb ADSL is much faster in.

And there is atleast a "soft-cap" of 10GB for 128kb Sentech, whatever that means.

Ekhaatvensters : Softcap means that they phone you when you reach 10Gb and warn you to slow down

The only time you ever reach 192k on ADSL is when using HTTP or FTP. Most other protocols are shapped into nonexistance. At least with MyWireless I can now get full speed, no matter which protocol I use

I would not be happy with ADSL, even if it is faster. We do 20GB every single month...

got 128k sentech, was happy, upgraded to 256k sentech, even more happy, can do anything, downloads @ full speed - no complaints

got it between may and june last year, cant remember, been down twice, maybe 3 times since then

Maybe you are closer to a tower than he was?

i was in roodepoort, little falls to be exact, between 2 and 3 bars, no problem, still full speed and all, in joburg now, full 4 bars, no problem

i'm quite happy with my connection, if adsl is better for him, so be it, different things for different people

Hmmm... never knew that MyWireless was completley unshaped.
Seems like Sentech have the best offering around technically, so what makes so many people unhappy with their service?

Are the speeds sometimes slow? Lots of downtime? Exactly how bad are the pings?
Doesnt seem to be anything else that would put me off about it. The prices are good too.

Sorry, Im kind of new to MyWireless. I was going to get it at first for the cap, but read alot of terrible things about it and they had no coverage for me anyway. Went with Iburst instead, at least theyve got speed and 64kb (or over) after your cap.

Ekhaatvensters : They had service problems just under 2 years ago. (There was a massive outcry started by Rodent and the rest of the MyADSL community. It was covered in almost every newspaper and radio station. It almost killed MyWireless, and are still trying to recover) Since then, they have improved their service dramatically, apologised for the past and have been outspoken critics of Telkom and Capping.

Speeds have always been fast for me (Although I have only had it for a month), no downtime. And as for pings, I am not sure. I dont really play games, but using Remote Desktop to my server in the USA is perfect and Skype is good

no problems either, very good uptime as stated in my previous post, good speeds, skype and all works fine. don't play online, so pings dont bother me that much, as long as sites load, i'm cool.

The service & reliability of Mywireless certainly has improved a long way since its launch .

But the competition has not been sleeping, they too have improved .

if the competition would just give the same sentech gives for the same price, it would be different story - unshaped, better or no caps

Im astonished

Truly. I am astonished.

I never had decent speeds. (always had 3-4 bar) using a patch panel.
Seeing all these people saying that sentech speeds (128k package, which incidentaly isnt realy 128k, its just called 128) amazes me.

I would never get any consistent download speed of more than 8KBp/s. Ares P2p was dead slow. I have used four towers since I signed up, Fourways, Randburg(mintek), Rosebank, Linden(i think)

My Sentech Contract ends at the end of this month so I can still compare the two ,

Speed test on www.sentech.co.za

24 April 15:35

192k ADSL

Test 1 1024 k
Speed Test
Your download speed is: 16.4 KBps, or 131.24 Kbps
The test took 62.422 seconds to complete

Test 2 512 k
Speed Test
Your download speed is: 18.54 KBps, or 148.31 Kbps
The test took 28.859 seconds to complete

Sentech 128k My wireless

Test 3 1024 k
Speed Test
Your download speed is: 4.2 KBps, or 33.6 Kbps
The test took 243.809 seconds to complete

Test 4 512 k
Speed Test
Your download speed is: 4.86 KBps, or 38.88 Kbps
The test took 105.349 seconds to complete

THIS TEST IN A SENTECH SPEED TEST< AND ADSL 192K KICKS IT!!!

THIS IS WHY I AM SHOCKED TO HEAR YOUR COMENTS, ESPECIALY SINCE I HAVE USED 4 TOWERS, AND HAD THE SERVICE FOR +- 24 MONTHS.

I also get downloads up to 35 KBp/s NO BULLSH1T.!!!!! which I never got anywhere close to on sentech, (highest ever , once off was like 18 KBp/s)

WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

This may have more to do with not understanding/working with the way Sentech's system works than shortcomings on their part: I will almost always use a multithreaded download manager (freedownloadmanager.org) because multithreading really seems to have an effect. By way of example: over the weekend I upgraded a PC and, seeing as it didn't have a network card for me to get files off the local network, I just went and downloaded* it. Left to the browsers (both IE & Ff), the dl speeds were around 8-12kB/s ..with FDM those SAME dl's ramped up to 25kB/s, and never came below 20kB/s for the duration. This while another PC on the network just about always has emule running.

* ..YOU be this cavalier about up and downloading stuff, just because you couldn't be bothered to go to a little bit of hassle on your 192k ADSL! In fact, and no: I haven't looked around for this, simply because I feel no need to, but please do show me an ADSL offering that lets you go through 10gig of traffic in a month for R500 ..on top of which, should you get to 10.1gig also doesn't promptly stop working until (a)you stump up more cash or (2)wait until the next month.

I also get downloads up to 35 KBp/s NO BULLSH1T.!!!!! which I never got anywhere close to on sentech, (highest ever , once off was like 18 KBp/s) WEIRD!!
I regularly see the Home/128 account downloading at 11-14kB/s, where I take the 14 to be the max; I could be wrong about the precise number that IS the max, but it's not worth getting excited about. OK, so your ADSL192 get you 35kB/s: great, that's really nice, I'll agree ..good luck getting that after you've slammed into your monthly cap.

Seriously; if you're going to make comparisions, at least understand (more of) the parameters (than you seem to, so far)

True that.Despite the recent issues with the Durbanville storm and other annoyances from time to time, I'M EXCEEDINGLY happy with the 256k , I would never consider ADSL.I'm a heavy user and usually download around(as in just under or over) 20G every month , and upload ~5-10 G/month as I use DC++ ,BitComet and eMule all the time.Had I been on any of the ADSL packages I'm sure I would pay heavily for that amount of data..and prolly my P2P would not work.Recently when I downloaded the FC5 3G it took less than 3 days(long yes but I got it...and can still download more stuff without being stumped by the famous "3G cap").

Have you considered that perhaps the people you were downloading from had limits on their max-upload speeds?
I'm a HEAVY p2p user and I'm very happy with the speeds I'm getting.

same here, get files with a lot of sources, there you go, multithreading is the key to wireless, seen that on sentech, iburst aswel

pfft... nothing on earth will convince me to EVER go back to Sentech... I also had their '128k' offer... when i first got it speeds were out of this world (considering i came from 56K modem)

There service, uptime and speeds were good. Then BAM! i was only ever getting 4Kb. After numerous complaints and numerous promises and more complaints and unfufilled promises I realised Sentech was useless.

We have a 512K at work and that is gathering dust cuz people refuse to use it, because the speed is crap.

I moved to iBurst and am more then happy... albiet their speeds are alos slowly decreasing as they start to oversell.

Ultimately i think my final broadband solution will be ADSL, but right now Iburst is still serving my needs.

I do hope that Sentech improve overtime... any competition is good against telkom.
