From Sentech to 192k ADSL. YAY!!!

Happy 512 ex 256 chappie

I am Exceedingly happy with my 512 connection. I started my Contract on the 256. I connect to the Durbanville tower using a 24dbi dish I found lying around. Signal strength is about 68%-79%.

with my 256, I was getting HTTP and P2P at 24-30KB. The problem was, that I was hitting my 20GB warning regulary.

I recently upgraded to 512 and am even more happy. I cant seem to reach 40GB's.
Speeds are about the same for P2P as with the 256, but the HTTP goes all the way up to 58-62KB. I think my P2P is being limited due to the fact that I still can only upload by about 16k, but I am not sure about that.

Anyway, Apart from some Linux Gateway issues recently. and the lightning strike on the durbanville tower. maybe 5 significant (half day) interruptions in the past year. Way less than my clients on ADSL.

Service levels are decent as well. The only complaint I really have is that it does not work reliably with my Gateway software, So I have to run a Windows Gateway Server.

Anyway, if you don't game FPS'es online and download more than 10GB a month, go with sentech.
 
Its a bit unfair to compare ADSL192 with MyWi128.
You should compare ADSL192 with MyWi256 as MyWi256 kicks MyWi128 off the map as many have, and are discovering.
Then there is the Cap problem, I see no mention of that with ADSL.
Dont get me wrong, I have MyWi256 abd ADSL512 which I've had for 3 years now and am still very happy with, but ADSL you can only enjoy for a short while and you're capped, that alone makes it pretty much worthless, not to mention the fixed line problem.
 
Different speeds for different areas? UNFAIR!

After reading all the posts (almost) on the forum, there is something that stands out: It seems to me that using a particular antenna in a particular area affects you download speed. This seems to suggest a problem beetween the towers and the central hub. Im just thinking, but if antenna A is connected to a central hub via a 1mbit link and antenna B is connected to the same hub via a 2mbit link and both have the same number of users, all users on antenna B will have alot more speed. This is caused by a lack of use of standards. Ofcourse, this would all go to hell, if the uplink or downlink is just 512kbit (he he he).
I can tell you that here in Nelspruit the speed is awful, actualy, that is an understatement.

I agree with ProAsm, but i should stress that the caps are due to the cost of the local loop, something ICASA was fighting for, dunno what happened since the last hearings but as long as telkom is in the loop (pun intended) there is no internet freedom in South Africa.
 
I was on MW 128 for just over a year, my parents still run on MW128 from which I am working right now. It wasn't the fastest, as mentioned in previous posts P2P was pretty poor. Yes, given hosts on P2P system can govern their bandwidth. This aside P2P allows for portions of the desired file from multiple hosts. Thus your max download speed = the speed of each whiling host added together. That said I recently aquire 192K ADSL, it was a hard choice as the wait time for ADSL is terrible. I however have seen a huge difference eg. Downloading CS Steam updates, P2P, File Downloads (FDM ofcourse but not neccessary as with MW).
I would love to say I believe Sentech is worth R500, but the web browsing speeds I am seing on MW are rediculous, I'm glad this site is local otherwise I would not have found this thread. I just completed a speed test and got 56K dial-up speeds (33.6kbps).
Don't get too hung up on Signal strength, your bottleneck is the link to the outside world via Sentech. I have just put this link onto an 18dBi antenna, no change in international web response, ping to local sites/sentech yes. I seriously hope Sentech pull themselves together we need them to be promote competition and choice in the market place.
 
with the int connection that sucks so much, i'm using the free unshaping proxy from openweb, no problem with int sites now, loading with no problem
 
go to www.openweb.co.za - register on the forum and check the thread on unshaping proxy. the free one works only up until the 15th of each month, but the pay for option goes for R59/m. for more info get in touch with MrBEEP. Will get myself one.
 
i also moved from 128 mywireless to 192 adsl..... i must be living near a VERY highly congested tower (menlyn) seeing that it sometimes took google 2mins to open... and i'm not kidding with that. At night it was so bad that things like MSN wouldn't stay connected. I tried EVERYTHING.... different routers....PPPoE, USB, bought an antenna.... nothing helped at all...

Certainly in my case this was a HUUUGE improvement! I only pay R270 + R100 for 3GB and R165 for every extra 3GB i use per month...
 
hmmm, on the same tower since May 2004, 1st year 128 and on 256 since.....and NOT sharing your experience. Had problems over the last few weeks, but apart from that, Menlo tower has been good to me in general
