I exist only in my own mind ...
A spokesperson for Shoprite/Checkers confirmed that they would be investigating Supreme’s chicken, but said they had strict quality control measures to ensure the safety of products.

Meat/chicken from Checkers is ALWAYS suspect

I'm just concerned if that's a health risk, seems like it but it could be perfectly fine.

Seems I could buy a chicken, ejaculate into it, carefully repackage and return it and there's a chance it could end up on someone's table. That's a bit icky.

Oh damn that's gotta be wrong
Man it's messed up what these companies can get away with, and as consumers we had no way of knowing this as far as I'm aware.

I wonder how this affects the healthiness and quality of the meat?

This company may *think* it is legal, but I suspect they are about to find themselves on the short side of the law.

My wife tells me that she never buys frozen chicken in the bin freezers. She only buys the fresh packed stuff... usually skinless breasts in the freshpak section.

But how do we know where *those* chickens come from?

 If pick n pay and checkers are going to be do blase about the quality of frozen bird they sell, then I too will be circumspect about where we buy our poultry in future ... and it'll probably be all from Woolies in the future

/hopes they too do not go to the slaughterhouse

The scary thing is that we are probably neon swindled on a more regular basis and don't know it.

This where a good government would protect it's citizens from this sorry of blatantly dangerous practice... but we all know ours are solely interested in self enrichment :(

Wasn't the competition commission threatening to investigate the poultry suppliers next? I thought I read that somewhere?

Woolies whole roasted chicken ftw!

Thankfully I've never trusted the idea of frozen chicken. Unless it's ground up & shaped into a patty, in which case I've already made peace with the fact that I'd probably rather not know what goes into it...

From the article
He said an expired chicken thawed for 24 hours at room temperature after it had been transported back to Supreme. Some of the chickens were treated with chlorine to reduce bacterial load.
He said chickens were never scientifically tested to determine levels of micro-organisms.
They were then injected with brine, repackaged and sold with a new expiry date.
...
Melinda White of Pick n Pay’s legal department confirmed that Supreme produced almost a third of the store’s “No Name” frozen chickens.
She said Supreme’s return policy stipulated that all chickens sent back would go to the rendering plant, where meat is processed into bone meal.
She said Supreme was a member of regulatory bodies that did not allow the renewal of expiry dates.

So the spokesperson of the chicken company says they are complying with the law but PnP say they didn't know they did this, but that the chicken was used for bone meal.
Thawing a chicken and re freezing it is not right from what I know, and the chicken company is saying they can't give a reason for issuing new expiry dates...find the culprit i say.

Imo dont trust woolies either. In our butchery we sell Spif chicken, and I can assure you its the best. So if possible, buy only spif. They supply in gauteng too.

Hey, what's the big issue? It is factory refurbished with full warranty. Tests better than new :) I have caught Checkers refurbishing beef fillet and imported cheese by replacing the in-store stickers on many occasions, so no need for them to act surprised. They are just blessed with the most clueless customers the world can provide.

We have started purchasing chickens directly from a farm... its like another world.

The things we get in supermarkets are not chicken... even Woolies chickens that are nice, are still small shrivelled up little things.
