Fault Reported : 4th march

Hey Guys....

I hope this is the right place to post this...as i am kinda running out of options on what to do with this Telkom issue.

I will explain backstory along with current issue to try explain things better.

A year ago i had 2 lines. 1 Phone and 1 ADSL. The Phone line was way too noisy for the DSL to hold. So they put my ADSL on a different line which worked great. After time i called Telkom to change the 2 lines into 1 line...fair enough? All went well i had my phone line and my adsl both on the new fresh line. I upgraded from 1mps to 4mps (which for some reason was running at 8mps?) was Epic...i really loved the 750 kb/s downloads

So that part aside here comes the real problem...

Five weeks(nearly six) ago a storm took out our entire street...noone had a phone line or DSL working. Our phone was stone dead, not even static. Called Telkom that night and reported the fault.

3 days later after hearing nothing i called 10212 again and they told me an engineer was gonna be at my place that day. He obviously...never did. Now this "An engineer is gonna be there but never is there" happend 3 more times after that. I called 10212 again and asked to speak to a Supervisor who promised me he would send an engineer out to check whats going on. So on the (11th March) Engineer comes over as promised and updates me on the situation.

The problem was that the new Epic 8mps line i had was cooked at the box and at another house on my street. The delay was that the people staying at that house are not there(On Holiay at time) and they need access/time 1-2 weeks to relay and connect the cable. However.....as a Temporary fix....they will disconnect my new cooked line and connect me onto the old broken noisy line i mentioned above.
The Techie was honest an i even knew myself ADSL would not work on this, however my phone voice line will. He said he was gonna try drop it from 4 mps to 1 mps to see if he could get it to sync , which it did not. (Also get insane crosslines over it, hear neighbors etc)

This is the last point at which i actually had any faith in Telkom on fixing this.

2 weeks on(21st March) I called 10212 again to see if the new cable has been fixed and if i could get the cable thats lying all bundle up on my garage waiting to be reconnected...connected again i was told my Ref was closed and that the problem was reported Fixed?! That she was gonna reopen a new fault?!

After arguing again to speak to a supervisor i got my old fault reopened and was promised a call back from supervisor ..which never happend...This went on for another 2 weeks! Of promises of techies coming out an call backs that never happen! I even got 2 TXT msgs saying my fault has been fixed?! During those 2 weeks i have got 4 different Ref numbers?!

This goes on till this week (Mon 4th April)
I get a phone call from the exchange asking me to check if my DSL is now syncing. It synced at 1mps and drops every 5 minutes. He asked me to check to be sure if i EVER was connected at 4mps wtf? As if i am making all of this up? After trying 50 times to explain to him this is a temp line and i need someone to reconnect it so i can have my godly 8mps back and crisp silent phone. He told me someone would be over 9 in morning....TO CHECK the Line i am talking about and imagining.

The next day the techie arrives...comes inside (Does not even check the line hanging from my garage and phone poll waiting to be reconnected) Picks up the phone says it sounds clear after listening for 5 seconds...does a line test and says your line is fine for 1mps and if it disconnected let him know. He was gonna phone back in an hour and he will have to drop line speed perm to 1mps...

Now of course i did not let him off the hook that easily...after venting my anger out and explaining to him how much an idiot he is saying my 4 mps line is dropped to 1mps on a temp line that another techie put me on real reason was because my ISP Openweb 250 gig account is actually capped and they throttling my speed on an ADSL i have not got to use for 2 months....

Yup this techie actually said my dead..unused and now hardly unsable ADSL which does not sync and if it does for 5 mins for 6 weeks is actually my ISP's Fault?!?....After 6 weeks waiting...6 weeks fighting 6 weeks of call centers the best Telkom can do is send me an idiot?
This guy HAD no clue why he was at my house...or what to fix...oh and he never called back like he said he would :P

Right after he left i decided to call Regional Manager who was actually quite rude... and asked for all my Ref numbers and that he would get back to me...after he called me back he was much more sympathetic and apologetic over the whole siutation and promised me an engineer would be at my house and an engineer would be at exchange and they would check the lines and see what the heck is going on at same time ...and i nicely asked if he could NOT send engineer i had earlier :)

As you thought...no engineers arrived...my magic 4 mps to 8mps line is still hanging from my garage and phone poll, a Regional manager who has not kept his promise an i have no idea where to go now or who to phone this week or what to do to get this resolved.

All i want to know from Telkom is if the line has been replaced and get off this temp one...and everyone at Telkom seems to think this Temp one is now my official line :(

I have kept every name (Even that muppet Tech), date and who i have spoken too along with my 6 Reference numbers...can anyone please tell me what to do or where to go from here?

1. Can Telkom actually do this? Insist i stay on a temp line they put me on and say 1mps dropping 5 seconds best they can do when it used to run at 4mps(at 8mps) 6 weeks ago and for a year fine? ...and NOT fix the line they said would be fixed?

2. I have paid for nearly 2 months for ADSL (1/m for phone) I have never been able to use? Can i get this back?

3. Who do i speak to next? How do i find out if they have fixed this cable and when can they connect me?

4. If it really gets to that point i actually tell them to shove it ...where is best to go? I need faster than 2mps and more than 30 gigs P/M for a home network? Friends and other family i know with neotel all complain about disconnects and how slow it is....Do i have other options?

Thanks anyone who can help on this issue

Remember to ask for a refund for your 2 month period you could not use DSL.

wow, what a cockup. seems there were quite a few irregularities that have lead to it taking so long to sort out. silly question, who do you pay the ADSL rental to? i'm sorry i'm not of much help, but you're entitled to credit for those two months of no service.
i find it easier dealing face to face with the staff at their direct shop, they can't just put you in an endless "please hold" loop.

lastly, i highly doubt you'll get 20gig p/m at high speed from any other means other than ADSL. sure the cellular companies won't have a problem supplying it, but it will cost a fortune

Wow, what a nightmare. Not sure I can help, but...

* Whenever I've had a problem that I can't sort out with Telkom over the phone/at the shop (luckily only twice thus far) I've given my ISP a call and asked them to do the negotiating. They usually know some people in Telkom that actually know what they're doing. Worth a try... they'll also end up losing a customer if you're forced to go for HSDPA or something like that.

* With regards to the refund - I've had occasion to apply for these a few times now already (the two occasions mentioned above and also while waiting for a re-install after moving) and I've had no problems receiving it - I always go ask them at the Telkom shop.

Good luck!

Our ADSL at work went out at exactly 16h00 on Friday afternoon...
Telkom cannot tell us what is wrong, nor are they in any particular hurry to fix it...

When I worked for Telkom I had 3 hours max to fix a fault or I'd be in trouble. Clearly that no longer applies...

We're moving the ADSL service to the fax line.. Again, waiting for Telkom to do the PROVISIONING so we can get the line up and running.

Total losses to our company: R70,000 and counting! Telkom just doesn't give a crap! They are intent on sliding every day on those snails smoking weed, to wherever they want to go, even if it takes 2000 years.

Hey guys,

Update...

Monday(11th April) i phoned customer care who promised me that day it would be fixed and looked into and resolved, i was really hopeful at this point as they seemed to understand the issue.

At around 4pm on Monday my line went dead again, and DSL died...No Dialtone nothing..However i was still hopeful that this was the big fix.

The next day (Tuesday) At 9am i checked my phone and DSL ....Both dead.....went to shops and back and my DSL was up and my Phone line.....I was stoked! Finally thought this was resolved....quickly logged into my router and saw instead of 8....Or 4...or 1 mps i am now synced at 384 Kbs....+Sigh+ However with fantastic noise levels, no static on my land line...so i assumed they just needed to bump up my speed...

Phoned Telkom around 12 on Tuesday and asked if they could put my line speed back to 4mps, after a few checks they said sure...no problem, just bounce your modem and it should be at 4mps sometime today.

After hanging up i bounced modem, still synced at 384 kbs....i also had a lot of clients phoning me on my cell which was odd and one client said my landline was just ringing and noone was picking up??

So i checked my phone, all was ok, i had dialtone (Crisp clear) I could not understand why i can send out calls but not recieve? So i phoned Customer Care yet again....told my advisor the problem she thought it was strange but would look into it and get back to me (Hehehe, here we go again...) and of course...never got back to me

So around 4 i decided to use landline and phone my cell phone to see what number was comnig up...and as i thought...it was not my number.....i had a NEW phone number..?!?! Without my knowledge or being told this, and now none of my clients can phone me?!

So Today (13th) I phone ...advisor again, who does a check and says that is deff not my line and that it belongs to someone else, and that she would seriously look into it and get back to me in an hour or so...and of course...as you thought...noone gets back to me..

So i phone her again a few hours later and she says the head technician is not phoning her back?!

Does ANYONE phone call back ANYONE Telkom?! Seriously? This is such a joke...Promised monday it would be fixed and now today i am not even on my own line!

This service is terrible....I had had issues with Telkom before but never on this level...Poor Communcation, Promises they never keep....and its perfectly ok to tell a "Paying" Customer....BS....

As for questions...

wow, what a cockup. seems there were quite a few irregularities that have lead to it taking so long to sort out. silly question, who do you pay the ADSL rental to?

I pay it to Telkom...I am...Or was on a 4mps line with a 250gb throttled account(20kbs day/ 10mps night) with openweb (Hardly got to use for 2 months :P)

Drive around the neighborhood
Look for the Telkom van (with a guy working at the Telkom box).
Ask him what he needs (Cokes, Burgers, whatever)
Go buy it.
Problem solved 2 hours later.
:-)

Otherwise wait till your number comes up on his job sheet.
