Can you back these allegations with some sort of evidence ? or are you just pulling it ou your .....

Rubbish. The key word here is HEARD. You did not SEE this happen so you actually know nothing. For all we know, you probably "heard" this from Alan or Marine1

I've noticed this forum is full of people who do not and then constantly challenge things that have been printed - some quite prominently. I suppose it saves you having to buy them

Well I have seen first hand evidence of it,

I live near the UKZN residences and they're a nightmare with families of 3 or 4 people living in the rooms.... and there seems to be nothing the Varsity can do about it either.

What?

Are you saying that you'd be much happier if you did not come into contact with blacks...? If you had your own res, your own school, your own shopping mall, your own bus stops, etc. Wasn't that a typical Afrikaaner mentality that created Apartheid?
Are you racist? Or rather do you find it hard to relate to people of other races? Do you think that your culture or race is better than the rest?

If I only came in contact with people who are like minded I would be happier. Predominantly I believe I would only mix with white people, because they are on average more like minded to me. It is not racist to prefer your own culture over that of others. Some cultures are offensive to mine, the same way I would find the Chinese culture of eating dogs offensive. I don't relate to other people whose culture is different to mine, race determines culture, but I don't care what race people are.

I think the Afrikaner culture, respecting others and the needs of others are more civil than shouting (having a so called conversation) at the top of your lungs while in a class. That is my reason for choosing PUK and I am happy with my choice.

Were there black people there? Were you comfortable socialising with them or did you stick to your own kind? if yes, don't you think your so called 'cultured' university had a lot to do with it?

My latest boss was black, so were my co-workers. I had one white co-worker but she was my assistant, I did not see her much unless she reported to me. I got along very well with everyone, even the people who circumvented internal control procedures, we were on very friendly terms. A black engineer gave me a mining uniform to remember the time I spent with them.

Forcing cultures together, creates more tension and racism, if people are allowed to chose their acquaintances, RSA would have allot less racism.

Black people have their schools and suburbs, so can white people. Our cultures and values differ significantly enough, and we want different things in our schools and so forth.
I am young, I don't remember Apartheid.
I come in contact with enough people to know who I want to spend my time with and who I don't, I have 4 hours a day free, I will not be patient with people I don't like for the sake of diversity and the warm fuzzy feeling of being open-minded. That includes not mixing some white and black people I don't have time for.

The residence my gf is in, the girl had a baby and had her bf sleep over many times, which is not allowed. If a white girl had her bf over for a visit after 11 she would be thrown out. Double standards and it took allot of effort to make the girl leave in the end.

Exactly, in this competitive world, a die hard racist can't afford to discriminate.
Forcing people together, does not make for a diverse just equal society, it just encourages racism.

I'd suppose you'd be able to post some links to all these stories you've read to save me trying to find them, and just to show you're not making stuff up?
I do read a number of newspapers and they bought and paid for, but I don't recall all these stories that you first heard and now have read.

I was a rental agent in Potchefstroom a few years ago and we specialized in rentals to students. So I do speak of experience.

We rented ou private rooms and flats etc. So let me tell you about this one bedroomed flat we rented out to a young lady.

When we went for our third inspection we found - three matrasses in the lounge and a matrass on the floor. A bed and two matrasses in the bedroom. Bedding in the bath and in the kitchen.

We decided to come back later that evening. What did we find?

- Lounge : Two people on each of the matrasses
- Room : Two people on the bed. The matrasses pushed together with five people
- One sleeping in the bath
- Two on a matrass in the kitchen

What more can I say? We told them all to go, and guess what, she actually had them all pay rent to her! It was so bad that the police had to be called.

After months of troubles we managed to evict them all.

That is why there is such a strict policy on allowing people in to a residence, to avoid people not suited to this unique housing environment.

I've had two spells as a student and on both occasions I lived in res. There was no way you could sub-let university residences. At Edgewood, you couldn't even let a woman up a men's residences without getting a huge fine and possible expulsion from university. Those were rules and there were sub-wardens employed by the university to ensure that the rules are adhered to. The people that are not suited to res life were usually expelled either for disciplinary problems or for slow academic progress.
So, don't blame the students for taking advantage of lax rules. But the point I'm disputing is that some students should not be allowed in res just because they are of a different culture. To me that defeats the whole purpose of multi-cultural campuses. The real world is open with multiple cultures co-existing. There is no place for cultural supremacy and students better learn that whilst they are at it.
If you are still a student, you better learn that also together with your varsity subjects because such cultural isolation breeds racism and xenophobia.

Most people end up working with other people at many levels. It should be encouraged early at tertiary level that people should develop understanding and appreciation of individual differences.

Most of my friends (Engineers) who had exceptional academic performance and did not partake in any res activity lack interpersonal skills. Its just been my observation since we all left UCT.

Forcing cultures together, with obvious opposition to such measures, will bring about more tension and real racism.

It is very obvious to me, interacting with candidates, who will not fit in to the residence and who will not. These people don't want to exclude people based on the colour of their skin, but on people who will not strive to achieve the objectives of the specific residence. An external party does not, should not ever have a say in such policy.
A company also has a right to deny applicants who will not fit in to the social framework of the company. Companies hire people based on merit, as the entry policies under discussion require also.

Having read this entire thread, I actually think this sums it up quite nicely.

About what you quoted, why do darkies piss their pants and call a racism card when the matter at hand has nothing to do with race, only real differences which should be acknowledged and understood.
A residence known for culture, in the heartland of Afrikaner land Potchefstroom, has a black student coordinating all cultural activities. He has won almost all competitions so far, goes to show that students with merit will never be excluded.
All this fuss, because officials know that some students will never be allowed in based on merit are pissing their pants!?

A logical man will not force conflicting cultures, where friction can easily come in to existence together, to create an environment where eventual racism will thrive.

Compatible cultures will find each other, incompatible cultures will eventually grow together, but not in an unhealthy environment.

These residences are under scrutiny because there are students who will never be allowed to enter if they were evaluated on merit alone. Instead these students want to be evaluated based on the colour of their black skin, that is racism, on which these students and officials insist. lol
