I'm encountering ftp problems - could this be my config?

Using APN of internet
Auth No *99***#

Normally have to ftp file around 100mb.
Right now I can connect to various ftp sites but cannot see any folders and files on ftp site. It was working, now broke.

Appreciate any help
John

Same problem

I noticed that yesterday too. Can log in to FTP sites but not get a directory listing. ADSL works fine. Also on internet APN.

Have you tried forcing your FTP client to use passive mode? Generally if you can login to FTP but get a time-out when requesting a directory listing it's due to the request being made in active mode and the data connection getting blocked by the firewall (I presume Vodacom's).

If i am having FTP issues i often find a disconnect and reconnect sorts the problem

Yes tried both passive and non passive mode - no go.
Right now Im okay - its working again, which would indicate its not a setting in my ftp client. Yesterday I was uploading a 90mb file and after about 10mb it would bomb out (lost connection). When reconnecting I was able to restart sometimes, other times not (could not even get a folder listing). Tried 2 different ftp clients (1 on xp and one on vista - same problem).
Anyhow Im okay for now...

FTP problem

I use FileZilla as an FTP client to transfer files to a web server. I have had no problems with this on MTN's GPRS/3G network for the past year. Today I purchased a 1GB Vodacom data bundle and found that it takes several attempts for any transfer to go through (files and directory listings), it seems to happen when the ports are opened for the transfer to take place, so I suspect it may be due to differences in the way MTN and Vodacom's firewalls are configured.

Any suggestions?

My apologies if this has been covered before, the search facility on this forum can't look for the word 'ftp'.

I don't know of any problems, so rather PM me you contact details, en e-mail addr, etc. and we can trace with you.

Actually there was a problem last week where the FTP mode got affected, so it might be related.

I happened to be using FTP last night myself (also FileZilla) and was running into problems using passive mode. I could login but once I went into a folder it would time out. I forced it to active mode things worked.

I suggest trying the [searchforum]"internetvpn APN"[/searchforum]...
I'm sure that would do the trick, but I'd prefer to hide behind Vodacom's firewall when I'm paying for every byte of traffic!

Active mode didn't work for me. I thought passive mode was the one to use when behind a firewall.

From what I understand the internetvpn APN just bypasses the NAT/PAT on the firewall. You still cannot initiate a connection from outside "in", so you should still be protected.

You're always behind the firewall, it's just the IP that's not NAT'ed on the internetvpn.

I thought the point of the 'internetvpn' APN giving you a public IP address was so that connections could be made from the outside in, so you could host services like remote desktop, terminal services and vpn.

I noticed that morkhans is in Cape Town, and so am I. Could the problem be local?

It's really to do with how your firewall is setup. You can configure your firewall to allow active FTP through, but people don't like it because it is considered insecure. In active mode the server you connect to initiates a data connection back to you from port 20 to a random high port. Most sysadmins don't like that :)

The 'unrestricted' apn is the one with open incoming ports, 'internetvpn' is un-NAT'ed but still firewalled. So we have:

1) 'internet' - NATed, firewalled
2) 'internetvpn' - Routable, firewalled
3) 'unrestricted' - Routable, open incoming ports

I'm also in Cape Town. Can you PM me details and I can try and emulate your problem?

The [searchforum]"Unrestricted APN"[/searchforum] exists for that purpose :)

I wouldn't be surprised.
