k, installed both and configured a user on server (no password option though :/) ... Installed FileZilla client and connected to server using local host (127.0...) number. I need to know how would i connect to this server from a different PC sitting on different network using same filezilla client? i doubt if 127.0.0.1 will work?

you need it allowed tru the local firewall and the IP of the server on the network. is it tru the internet or just a LAN?

normally you need to assign an IP address & then a login & password.
open filezilla enter above & you should have access.
you can access places in another country if the destination you are accessing via the net allows ftp.

What FTP server are you using? Port forwarding and firewall settings aside, have you already tried connecting to it from an outside connection?

oh yah, i managed to set password .... Am using FileZilla for both Client and Server .. I'll try my IP address to access the server outside then
k, let me explain ... I need to access a folder at home from work. I have FileZilla Server running at home pointing to that folder and have FileZilla or any other ftp client at work. Do i need port forwarding on router and that PC's IP (DHCP) at home to connect? The FileZilla server ip was configured as 127.0.0.1 and default port

The problem is the router uses a dynamic IP which changes at the wim of your isp. Use something like DynDNS.

Teamviewer works wonders try it. my 5yr old uses it often to remote to me.
No issues at all.

Filezilla is not a bad solution but you could quickly feel like you are stuck in the deep end if you don't know a bit about networking and routing.
If you go the Filezilla route you will need to do a few things;
- Make sure Filezilla server is not just listening on your local address (127.0.0.1) -- otherwise you won't be able to access it. You need it to listen on something like a 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x. or whatever else your local network runs on.
- You then need to open ports on your router / firewall and forward these to your Filezilla server
- You then need something like DynDNS or No-IP or something that publishes your dhcp address to the web
You will then be able to connect from work to your DynDNS address which will hit your router which will forward it to FileZilla which will hit your user account and ask your password ...
So yea: TeamViewer might be a bit easier -- It's mostly install and go.

I downloaded TeamViewer and installed it yesterday. So it generates an ID and ask me for the client ID (or the other PC's ID) .. is this all its needed to connect to the other PC, no firewalls blocking or stuff?

Okay, here's a dumb question ... I connect with my peer with TeamView with 'filetransfer' option. This means i can see his desktop and copy stuff to his PC. Say i tranfer a 1GB movie, does this affect both our bandwidths? he has only 200mb local bandwidth and say 2GB international left ... what are the conditions to be met to successfully transfer files between too ADSL accounts?
