FTTH - Camps Bay - Cape Town

I heard there are area's where you can have FTTH if you really wanted it.. but then you gotta fork out the mulla. (the money)

R25,000 installation cost and then about R6000 monthly fee for about 100gig of data +- on FUP.

Obviously the per gig price if you addon data is cheaper then, (it won't be like 3G/HSDPA/LTE prices per gig on data)

Street boxes now with Smart Village stickers on them.

Seems like they are connecting up houses in a couple of the top roads, believe mountain in the way of DSTV signal up there.

No prices on their website, I can only imagine and “speeds up to 4Mbps”, what a joke.

I am hooked up with smartvillage in Theresa Ave. If memory serves they pulling DSTV signal from Ravensteyn Rd. We are too close to the mountain so signal is cut off. I have spent close to R50k since i moved here to get signal. From broadcasting off a neighbour's dish to having cables pulled on the mountain to other neighbours to using a slingbox from my office in the waterfront. This service cost us R3500 set up and R122 per month. Then you have to add the DSTV subscription on top of that. Fibre is paid for by multichoice. The R3500 is for the fibre to SAT converter. Sadly no internet via fibre. They do not have the cabling to get internet from town. So i have to be happy with 6mbps. Not ideal but it works.

Hopefully some day telkom will actually get their butts into gear and lay the fibre. In the meantime one can just live in hope.

So are you saying they got a whole fibre network in your area, you hooked up to it but they are not providing internet over it, only DSTV? That would be totally bizarre

The fibre is rolled out by Smartvillage for DSTV users, as Camps Bay cannot get satellite due to the mountain blocking. The fibre is only in the lower areas of Victoria Road/Camps Bay main road and roads closer their.

Comtel Communications based in Sable Square, Milnerton - www.comtel.co.za or [email protected] has joined as a strategic partner to provide the FTTH and wireless as an aggregated data service, using their last mile fibre and their wireless. Contact Comtel if you want fibre or wireless in this area. Speeds are from 5Mb to 100Mb/s Synchronous Uncapped. Contentions are 1:1/1:5 & 1:10.

Hope this helps!

Did you manage to register your interest on the Vumatel web portal yet?

If not, please register your non-binding interest with Vumatel by going to https://vumatel.servicezones.net/capetowncitybowl/campsbaybakoven and click on “Search for your address” to complete the registration.

It is only an expression of interest and non binding, so you have nothing to lose by registering and by doing so you will make the initiative more likely to go ahead, Vumatel typically looks for a 30% to 40% level of interest from a community before they will proceed with a rollout.

Basically if no one registers their interest nothing is going to happen so please socialise, spread the word and encourage people to register.

Can't hurt to have another option.

Thanks

I can tell you that the Vumatel fibre is worth working towards... this is a local speedtest over wifi in my house in Parkhurst:

So now Camps Bay has MTN FTTH going in as well, they seem to be covering roads that Telkom have not yet covered.

Contractors currently trenching in the following roads:
Ottawa
Fulham
Stern Close
Hove
Rottingdean
Contractors tell me they are going down to Victoria and into Bakoven.

Now we just need MTN to announce their "open access" ISP partners with hopefully far better pricing and packages.

Telkom told me a month or two back that they are still going to cover the rest of Camps Bay (they currently only cover about 40/50%) but their civil works/rollout seems to have stalled.
Going to be interesting to see if Telkom and MTN over lap.

I know it's been a while, but anyone got Fibre in Camps Bay and using a good service?

I am unfortunately down the wrong end -- Bakoven end of Theresa - where Telkom service stops... any ideas why that is? I'd be more that interested in someone who fancies sharing a connection who lives further up the street!

Telkom are busy expanding to that end for Theresa, if you look at the Telkom pole in the fire break at the end of Theresa you will notice fibre conduit going half way up it.

I'm in camps bay, Chas Booth and got the fibre line, had it over a year now already. I went with WA but a few months ago signed up for data via Afrihost and just my line is still with WA as per the 2 year contract. But have a look at their coverage map and you see they still busy expanding. Who knows how much longer its gonna take.

Its worth it when its done. If you're home and see the Telkom guys maybe ask them the timeframe. I was luck as the access pole is on my property so they would call me to get in so I could track their progress.

Heard on the radio today that Cybersmart fibre is now in more places. They say they are in Camps Bay too -- but I expect they are just using Telkom's lines too.

I'll ask Telkom and Afrihost again and see if they have any news!

I'm guessing Vumatel have given up now then?

Telkom and Vumatel are signing (or maybe already have) a network sharing agreement so that they do not duplicate fibre networks in suburbs.
