FTTH - Gillitts / Winston Park

I don't suppose anyone knows of a fibre provider in Winston Park that can provide 6-12 month contracts? Or is Telkom the only one with their 24 month options? I really can't stand that sort of lock in duration, would rather pay a couple grand extra initially..

Not that I could find. The Telkom agreement allows for a cancellation fee billed should you terminate earlier. I cannot see another provider rolling out in the same area though.
 
The fibre cable runs into this device. From here it connects to a WAN port on compatible router via usual network Cat5 or Cat6 cable.

Interesting-looking box ... rather different to the DSL modem/routers we've gotten used to.

I see there is an indicator light marked "POTS" - something to do with an RJ-11 socket for an analogue phone, perhaps ?
Is there perhaps a model number on that thing ?

Yip. There are two RJ-11 plugs allowing for two phone lines. Will only be active if one purchase the telephone line with the FTTH service.
 
Is anyone in this area in the same boat as me?

Telkom completed the installation but the service is not connecting? Really painful...
 
There was a lot of talk, that Cotswold Downs was getting it's own exchange and 100mb line to each house... as usual it was a lot of talk.

I thought Vodacom where going to do something in your estate, well that is what my ex wife said so not sure on how true it is.

Haven't heard a thing bud, will make some enquiries.
There was a Telkom guy scratching around in the manhole the other day, but just doing a repair and knew nothing about fibre rollout timings.
Vodacom can barely maintain an EDGE wireless signal round here when the power goes out.

If it changes let us know, might have to move, but I hate golf, some interesting terrain for me and my dirtbike though :D
 
Sheesh, didn't know there were so many upper highway people on here :D Would love to understand Telkom's roll out strategy, my dad stays in Winston Park but only half of it is getting fibre at the moment (he's unfortunately on the side that is not).

Let me try to explain what they do...

The ideal is for the entire exchange area to be converted to FTTH but that is not always financially feasible or even technically possible.

So what they will do is to identify the most feasible suburb or portion of a suburb and begin there.

Per the very simple diagram, the central office (exchange) is in the middle.

From the exchange you have a main copper cable to the various SDCs (Street Distribution Cabinets).

Then there's distribution copper cables to many DPs (Distribution Points) that in turn feeds to the last point of connect before the drop wire to the jack in your house.

To replicate this with fibre is a massive undertaking, so Telkom will target a cluster of customers fed off the same SDC and begin there. Their ideal would be to recover all the copper afterwards.

If it is feasible to do another SDC, they will. If not they will move to a different exchange and do the same there and leave the rest of the SDCs as is (on copper).

Using the above (or below depending on your settings) you can see that your dad is hypothetically on SDC4 and Telkom has decided to provide FTTH to SDC1.
