Hi there,

These guys have installed fibre twice in the past 2 years, but we still aren't on any coverage maps? The last time they said the project would be finished was at the end of April. It seems as though they have finished digging all the trenches and put the cable down, but we still are not on any maps for fibre. Im stuck in this place using crappy Telkom LTE that is constantly disconnecting and never has any signal, even though there is LTE according to the coverage map.

Does someone know how long it takes until we can actually use the fibre after they have finished all the digging and stuff?

Thanks

My parents have lived on Austin road for 15 years now and this thing pops up every 2 years or so.
Seems like the effort for turnover isn't enough in that area. Sorry to say.

I am on Allan Rd and they laid the conduit just before the festive season, From what I saw it was a 4 core conduit. I am not sure if they have pulled the fibre through yet. I see they now digging down George Rd.
I spoke to the guy at the side of the road and he said it's Link Africa doing the installation and it is for the residents. Yet I remember when they laid the fibre a few years ago, but that ended up being a main data line for Vodacom.
I have hope for this installation though, they have a lot more access manholes than before.
I was able to find a mention for Allan Rd on Lightspeed's Website under their building list, but it was the only mention for Glen Austin.

Ok, so every now and again I drive down Allan Rd from Grand Central side. I have noticed that someone has planted new poles (almost right next to the abandoned old Telkom Poles for Cu, and strung up a fiber. I also see a couple of spurs hanging of going into the plots every now and again, as well as those cross hangers and a roll of slack at others.

It goes about halfway down Allan, right up to George Rd.

Any idea who the operator is.? What's the chance of fiber for the rest of GA?

Would be a joke is is was OS (OpenServe) (waisting/duplication/ existing infra), or cudoes for the new operator.

I'm of the opinion , due to the under servicing of plots in general, there's something to be made for someone with not-so-crushing-balls!

Same boat

I was wondering the same thing. It makes a lot of sense to run it via poles instead of trenching. They should put up signs saying its not copper, you don't want the crooks thinking there is copper in those lines.

I have two sets of fibre running under my entrance . Vodacom is one, i think it is just part of the cellular backbone and the other is Link Africa, they did the installation last year, It seems they are catering to the business market only, they sold most of their residential interests last year.

I have seen Open Serve around quite a bit, Had a chat with the technician, all he knew, was the job he was told to do, no idea what it was meant for. Open Serve doesn't even show any plans for our area.

Lightspeed has Allan Rd as part of their distribution, but apart from my initial query to them, they haven't even come back to me.

Had a quote from Bitco a few years ago for R12k per month. After getting that , Telkom LTE didn't seem too bad.

Lets home something develops this year.

Was googling abit, trying to figure out how the internet coverage is in the Glen Austin area and found this thread.
I'm going to go check out a place on Hampton Street.
Regarding the LTE, how is the signal for Telkom? I have a current LTE package with Telkom, haha and well since I'm in IT, Internet access is playing a great role in my choice of homes.

I don't trust Telkoms Coverage map, cause in my 5 years of using TelkomLTE, I've lived smack bang in the middle of a "Covered LTE" zone, and had next to no signal, and the strongest signal I've ever had was about 7KM outside of the "Covered" Zone...

Best way to test is buy a prepaid sim and put it in your phone and moved around with it or buy the 500GB R50 deal and use that to test at night

JumboTech have submitted about 60 orders already for Fibre in Glen Austin Ah

Code:
Good morning. Metrofibre has said they will give us an update by Monday regarding how many orders have been placed in total by all resellers.
We have placed around 60 orders ourselves, so we are hoping the rest of the resellers have placed enough orders fot us to hit the 100 order mark. Then Metrofibre will review the minimum uptake again or decide if they will start with the project.

Code:
Jumbo Technologies and GARA has worked with MetroFibre to fibre up the rest of Glen Austin . MetroFibre has approved the business case this week, however they will require minimum uptake of 233 plots/cottages to sign up before they start the fibre project, as this is the number of customers it would take for the project to make monetary sense for MetroFibre.

Jumbo Technologies is offering free installation to the first 100 customers who sign up with them. If you are interested please contact Jumbo Technologies on:

or 0102850810 to get more info.

Or apply online via the following link:

I had the Vodacom guy come to my gate, Signed with them the next day and they sent me a router two days later.
He was the only person to contact me, had no clue otherwise.

If you work for Jumbo or know who is marketing for the area, please suggest putting a leaflet on peoples gates.
I am not a member of Gara or part of the Whatsapp group, and I am sure there are a lot of people like me.

How can they send a router when MetroFibre is just starting to plant poles for aerial fibre, Openserve perhaps?

Thanks will suggest that to them, there are flyers everywhere on Poles and at local markets.

Currently 60 have showed confirmed interest in MetroFibre from all vendors or ISP but they have started with 1st phases ie. Poles and Aerial Fibre..
