Hi All,

I'm looking for recommendations for a decent FTTH ISP who would be able to offer a static IP address.

I run an accounting program on remote desktop and a small VoIP server, having a static IP would just make things easier.

I currently use Afrihost, I'm on the Home Uncapped 10Mbps Openserve package which sets me back about R650 p/m. I'm looking for something of simmilar spec in more or less the same price range, obveously taking into account the fixed IP will carry an extra charge.

Afrihost has confirmed they are not yet able to provide fixed IPs on fibre. Unfortunate as I'm very happy with them otherwise.

I dont think any FTTH providers offer static ip at this stage but I stand under correction.
Just use a dynamic dns service to connect to the remote desktop.

TT Connect does (or used to - I mean they can. They assign a static IP to their ONT by default - its simply a feature of their network architecture, they just don't tell the end user).

I am using dynamic dns, it's just a pain because typically the connection will flap when I need it and then it takes a few min for the DNS to update. The best solution I've found to date is using the DDNS feature on the mikrotik's, Mikrotik provides you with a domain and it updates itself as soon as the public ip changes.

The other issue of course is if you use servies like unblock-us.com. I like my hulu account, but every time the IP changes I have to log in to the service so the IP can update on their side.

Having a static IP would just make life easier... With ADSL, the ISPs would set up an L2TP tunnel and the tunnel would get a static IP, don't know why they can't do the same with fiber?

I wonder if Africa will ever see IPv6?? #wishfulthinking

Since I got my fibre line(vumatel + cellc fibre), my IP address never changed.

Vuma also install point to point fibre, should also automatically have a static IP. I dunno about GPON. I'll ask someone here.

I would assume GPON also assigns a static IP to the ONT, as the fibre provider sends layer two traffic to the ISP?
