Fibre to the Premise gaining ground

Fibre to the premises (FTTP) will play a much bigger and earlier role in next-generation broadband in the UK than was assumed even a few months ago. That means that Britain could be getting the full benefits of superfast broadband years earlier than expected.

Blood article title is misleading! This is SOUTH AFRICA, not UK!. *g*... I really hate it when you think its related to South africa and you click on it and its got nothing to do with us! Rubbing salt into a wound!

:D

Heh, I feel the same thing... getting my hopes up, only to have it dashed.

Now if only !CASA and the SA DoC and guavamint would read these articles and do something similar! *sigh* What a pipe dream.
What are you on about?

Every single ECNS license holder (including over 300 major ISPs and telephone network operators) was legally permitted to start building their FTTP network months ago. Its got nothing to do with ICASA and everything to do with investments by network operators.

Problem is that FTTP is is a huge investment that no one is yet willing to make.

Title should be changed to "FTTP gaining ground in UK"

Yeah, it's easy to just blame the government for everything;)

How about municipalities getting involved with enterprising companies and laying fibre through the sewer system? There is already enough fibre running to base stations so the sewer systems can be the quick and easiest option

ok where do i apply for it? how much? can i get at least a 4MB line uncapped/unshaped ?

I agree wholeheartedly.
Keep it local, or at least indicate that it's not local in the title!

And the crime problem, especially the "liberation" of any cable going into the ground, and then getting resold to some foreign entity, is not helping. Government should declare the theft of telecoms equipment as an act of terrorism, as people that do it, is in fact acting the country's future prosperity.

Cable thieves aren't interested in the cable... they just want the metal inside. They will quickly give up on stealing cables if they get nothing more than a blob of glass after burning their takings :p

Fibre is actually a great way to discourage cable theft.

talking about "next generation" network.... anybody know something about this super, wonderful, better than we've seen before or even dreamed up yet, ... network that Telkom is currently advertising on all radio and tv channels?
Is it their 'superfast' 385k adsl line they're bragging about (like Neotel's "fast internet")... or is it really something that will break new grounds, and provide proper service?
Anybody know when the "soon" is? Next month/next year/next decade?

Sometimes the network provider's idea of what fast (or even superfast ) internet is, differs vastly from what us user's idea of fast is.

They are mostly just punting their new backbone network that is under construction. It had to be ready with fibre to all the 2010 stadiums and they are busy laying fibre in the rest of the country now.

Its unlikely to mean fibre to your home any time soon

Too True

Then what ????

The Municipality can have it's own little "MetroWeb" --get an ECNS licence and stick it to Telkom.
But it is not going to have National or International connectivity ( well NOT at fibre speeds )

Still -- IF they started NOW then they MIGHT be READY for when the BIG fibre cable comes knocking.

Could have quite a nice jump on the market. Run the whole town on VOIP

ANY properly run Municipalities out there ?????

Unless and until the other netwotk infrastructure is in place it will make NO difference.

Everything has to happen TOGETHER.

The municipality won't run the service, just get a cut of the profits for the use of their infrastructure (sewers;)). I think this is a win win for all:)

What an absolutely SPIFFING idea! Or even the water lines would do, for that matter? ;) Course there might be some massive foulups like raw sewage on the beaches and massive water line breaks everywhere... But worth it in the long run?
