I don't think DFA counts as an open access network as they only lease dedicated fibre to ISPs.

Hi I am a newbie, but can not find the answer to this question.

If Telkom offers fiber to my building do I have to contract with them for data or do I have a choice of companies as I did with DSL?

Thanks,

Andy

Telkom have an open access network so you can choose your ISP.

What???

DFA operates what is the very epitome of an open access network...

I don't think you understand. DFA doesn't run a network where you can plug in your router to provide service to end users but leases fibre out to operators.

Open to any operator not end users. The end user could be ftth or fttb. You are just thinking like an end user. You must browse their site.

With respect to understanding, my company is a DFA client. I know their products and network intimately. And yes, you can as a consumer go buy your own DFA ring, backhaul, and last mile connection, then build into your own core networking infrastructure. Open access doesn't mean it's open to consumers for plug and play use. You misunderstand open access if that's what you think it is. As an open access network, services are by the very definition of open access, separately provisioned from layer to layer. You cannot buy exclusivity on the DFA network, and you cannot have DFA build your own link only for your use. Companies light fibre between end points on their network on a non-exclusive basis between two or multiple points.

Why DFA is always on these lists of providers though, I don't know. People keep getting confused about what DFA offer. They're an OAN and don't build or light anything up to any end user, unless that end user operates its own existing network. There's a company right now making claims to compete with DFA on a non open access basis, and also operate and own the consumer and business provisioning and networking, and breakout. It's absurd, but mybb members are letting them make ridiculous claims without challenge, and are even divulging their personal details to this company on these nonsense claims, without them having a single metre of fibre in the ground, let alone a license to do so in a single area. And this is the problem with the lack of education in SA about fibre networks and what's involved, and for some companies their own lack of understanding too. We were also naive about this all and wanted to make big, bold claims, until reality kicked in...
