Ok so my 1999 Golf 1.3 seems to be guzzling abit
I put R250 in about 2 weeks back and from 29 liters i got 290 kms. So this is about 10kms/liter.
does that sound right for an older model like that. i have 15'' mags and 2 subs in the boot so it may be causing some drag but should i replace/check anything. it went for a major service around 6 months ago.ive always had this problem since owning the car

not too far out of the ordinary... my city milage is about 12kms/liter while open roud is 10kms/liter

and I'm driving an Audi A3 2.0

It depends on your driving style and density of the traffic really. 10km/l isnt too far off I think. My Corsa 1.4 gets 12km/l, put when I push it it can easily move down to 10km/l

Its not too bad considering that you only have a 29liter tank.
Also depends on if you drive during peak times because if you do there is no way you are going to get decent fuel economy.

Very true. Small motor does not automatically give you better fuel consumption. For myself (some years ago) I have always had higher fuel consumption driving a 1.3 than driving a, say 1.6. All to do with my driving style, wanting a certain rate of acceleration means giving it more stick in a 1.3 than a 1.6, which means more fuel.

Since then I I have had two different 2.0L motors, and got better fuel consumption out of them than with my past vehicles a 1.3, 1.4, 1.6. That said, I have "grown up" a bit since then and my driving style has definitely changed to a more sedate style.

Besides that, the Golf 1.3, 1.4 is known to be heavy on fuel.

that's about what I burn (combined-cycle) with a 1993 Mercedes 2.3 litre motor....:D...190E....:)

That is about spot on for a 1.3 Citi. If you want better consumption, go for a 1.6.
Town consumption is ALWAYS higher than driving out in the country, and with all the roadworks around Joburg with the constant stop start driving, you are lucky to be getting that!
I was getting 9.8 l/100 around town whilst in Joburg last week...then I filled up, and headed for Harrismith...filled up there and got 5.8l/100 for that section, thanks to NO traffic, being able to cruise at a constant speed and a nice tail wind! :D

Yep, smaller engine does not mean lower consumption.

Quite a few guys I know have Corsa Lite's fitted with 2.0 16V (c20xe) engines and they get 14km/l city driving. That's better than any of the standard Opel Corsa's.

Shouldn't city be worse than open road ? Got the same car get about 9litres per 100 kms so (just better than 10kms/l) and about 14-15/100kms in city.

Oh for the days of mpg when we all spoke the same language!

I always use l/100, simply because all road tests are done that way...I agree km/l is easier to work out if you don't have a calculator, but it does get confusing, as the numbers run in the opposite direction to l/100....:(

Oh...and yes, City will always be worse than open road...you cannot get decent consumption with stop/start driving...end of story.

5.9 l/100km = 16.9 km/l

1.9TDi VW Polo

Mine's the 74kW model, the 96kW generally has a bit better fuel consumption.

If you are hammering it then 10l / 100k is pretty good, its what I get out of my 1.4 Corsa Essentia. However when I drive more relaxed I get about 7.5l / 100k or 13km per liter.

shoh, that's interesting.
looking at your reported fuel consumption I'm VERY happy with my auto 330i. (e46)
I get the same mileage as a 1.8 or 2.0 engine.

Argh! km/L is not consumption, L/100km is :( How does one consume a kilometer?
