So in the new year I will have a new job which will require me to drive +-90 km a day. Do you guys have any tips and tricks on saving fuel and what is the opinion on the most economical way to drive?

Don't drive like a maniac and redline your engine... move into the next gear as soon as approriate ( normally around 3000rpm)

Leave good following distance so you don't break and drive but rather have a constant speed....

Diesel.

Stick to 100-110, makes a massive difference, Petrol cars included. A good 100-150km's more.

I do 100km's a day, get 850km's on a tank with a heavy foot and traffic, 1000-1200km's long distance. 54l tank.

Avoid traffic. Sitting in first is the worst you can do.

Anticipate your driving well in advance...

When to brake; pick up speed etc.

Make sure tyre pressure is tops.

I am constantly amazed at how poorly people anticipate things. WTF.

No wonder there are so many accidents. **** I'd see a mile away I can see the car(s) in front of me speeding towards then braking hard at the last second. All. The. Time.

Anticipating the movements of others isn't necessarily defensive driving- I use it to my advantage when making my way through traffic. It's primarily a safety mechanism, with the added benefit of smoother overall driving- less braking and acceleration, which results in better fuel economy.

My last job had me driving 45km each way, against traffic on the N1 in CPT. I still got in earlier or left later to avoid the little traffic that still accumulates at Koeberg Interchange.

Are you able to work flexi-hours at all?

Get Waze.

No I will not be able to do flexi - hours. Hopefully there would not be any traffic as it is in a rural area. I will be doing about 15 km on the N4 so I would imagine there would not be a lot of traffic.

I drive 70-100km a day.

My tips:
1. Diesel :P
2. In summer, 0-60 windows open. more than that, aircon on.
3. Engine brake when approaching a red light and try to time it well in advanced. (let go of the accelerator and cost)
4. In traffic, try keeping a constant speed even when others are driving bumper to bumper (unless someone tries to cut in front of you without indicating. then you FLOOR IT!)
5. If your car down not display real time fuel consumption, listen to your car and try to find the best speed\gear for maintaining speed in different zones.
e.g I found 4th\60kmph works best in a 60km zone, 5th\80kmph in 100km zone and 130kmph\6th in 120 zone (Yup, over the speed limit)
6. No matter how tempting it is to see how fast you can get to 100, take it easy, listen to your car and be gentle.

I bought a cheap scooter for when I need to get around during peak. Best 6k I ever spent. Except that one time...

best tip I can give is to get into top gear as soon as possible ( even if it means accelerating harder in the lower gears to get there) and then keep the car in the top gear with being as gentle as possible on the accelerator. If you are not that gentle, and its an auto then it will drop a gear..

I brought the wife's crv (2.4 auto,4wd, 1.7tons ?I think..) from 12.5L/100kms (50%city) down to 8.1L/100kms (20% city driving admittedly) this way. at the same 50% city driving as her, I would have been settled on 9.5L/100kms i estimate..

I'm doing 80kms a day.
