Hi All,

I have a Samsung Z400v (VLive) phone. I phoned Vodacom Support who were quite helpful and they manged to get me up and running within a few minutes. I can now surf the web from laptop using phone via bluetooth. :D

I have a few questions I regarding the speed when using the phone as a modem.

1) The guy at vodacom said it would not be as fast as using a 3g mobile card. Is this true and can anybody say why.

2) What kind of speed (kbps) can I expect using my phone.

3) I added the MyMeg 150 onto my contract. Whether my phones connects via 3G, Edge, or GPRS, will it still come off my MyMeg bundle.

Thanks in advance

Hi there. with regards to your questions:

1) Well i dont know what he's reasoning behind that answer would be but 3G is 3G. You will get the same speed over the phone than you will over a data card.

2) If your phone is connected to the 3G network then you should be getting round 384kbps ( note that 3G and HSDPA speeds are vastly different ). I have no idea what transfer rates are over bluetooth but i think its around that speed so as long as you not using HSDPA you should be fine.

3) It doesnt matter what type of connection you get, it will still come off your bundle. The only way it wont come off your bundle is if you connect using CSD.

i actually have it the other way around... the phone (N6680) shows much better 3G signal than E620 or E220.
The phone will sometimes show even full signal 3G, yet with data modem only 1-3bars.... is the phone's antenna that much better, or is it just unrealistically optimistic ?:)

Ceebee, I have found my 6680 can't use 3G over Bluetooth. If I max out the connection it freezes and I have to disconnect and reconnect to get it working again. Anything below 200 kbits/sec is ok. What are your observations?

haven't used the 6680 much for connection since getting the HSDPA modems, but before HSDPA came out the 3G speed was quite good, I used to get consistent 350-384kbps on 3G, which nowadays is sometimes not even attainable with HSDPA modem  perhaps is due to then there was much less users on the network.....
If Bluetooth can do about 700kbps then it should be fine for 3G only...
