Right, considering I, too, was once a mindless peon, I originally ran Windows XP on my machine :D. However, now I want to do a full conversion over to Linux (either Gentoo or Kubuntu - not sure yet), however I have 800GB of data sitting on NTFS partitions :(. Now I could just install Linux with NTFS rw support, but it kinda defeats the purpose of a full conversion. I would like to run xfs or, god forbid, ext3. Also I have had 3 hours sleep (thank you, Linux From Scratch), so I could be rambling on about pointless crap.

Basically I am wondering whether to dual boot Linux and a hacked-down version of XP to use just to run my games for when I go to a LAN. Meh, I just don't know how to fix this and retain all my data

sad face.

:(

I would advise keeping the hacked down version of XP for games.... for now.

Yeah, those were my thoughts as well...

As long as I can run Battlefield 2 and WoW on Linux, I am unlikely to boot into XP for anything other than LAN parties.

Ditto... I got bf2 running on a laptop... its sad cause it crashes randomly (bluescreen) on the lowest graphic settings :(

You could always use a portable HDD as your XP disk. That way its not going to interfere with your linux experience, but you can just "plug windows in" when you need it for a LAN.:)

You don't more than a few gigs for a windows installation anyway, so it's worth keeping one around. And it's useful when you need something that 'just works' if you in a hurry...

The fact that I need stuff that "just works" is the reason I am installing Linux in the first place :D

Is portage in a better state than it was a year or so ago?

I used to really like Gentoo because of portage but its problems became a bit much for any machine you actually had to use regularly.

I'm not actually too sure, haven't used Gentoo in a while, hence why I was considering trying it out again.
