Do we have any in SA? How much am I looking at?

two options really ... LG PA70G (you can get the "60" as well, but it's not good enough for movies. Cost is about R 7000. I've seen this operate in a light room (one 60 watt light) and it's fine... however watching stuff during the day is not an option.
The other option is the Optoma ML 500 ... but it's old technology.

I've been looking for one for almost a year now, and there really aren't that many options. Samsung is going to release a new lineup of LED projectors, including a 1000 lumens - that is 300 lumens more than the best one I've seen so far (LG PA70G ) There is no release date or pricing yet ..

I use an Acer H5360 720p 2500 Ansi lumens projector.
A full 1080p dropped the brightness quite a bit so I settled for 720p.

Throws a great 120" picture that is bright enough to watch during the day or at night with all 4 spots on.

Thanks Mike, I've seen your setup in the loft - it is very nice. But we're looking at LED projectors and there are very few options the South African's.

Update on the Samsung LED - it sells for R 8500 or so

Check out audiosure, they have a great brand called Vivitek. I tested several models, the best being a Full HD LED 1080p, hooked it up my PS3 and the image was crystal clear. However im not sure which retailer stocks their range of projectors. Contact them to find the nearest dealer/retailer who stock those projectors.

I was thinking of getting my daughter this LED projector because its very light at 500gr but I'm concerned that 300 lumens may not be suitable for her classroom. it goes for under R6500.

300 lumens in a classroom is not enough. I've worked with the 700 lumens LED's , and even that is not bright enough. Apart from the brightness, the pixel shape of the LED does not handle text as well as the LCD. HAve a look at the LG pa60g (500 lumens) and judge for yourself - you can get it for under R 6000.

So what suggestions are there for a projector in a large lounge that could be used for DSTV in place of a TV?

I installed the LG PA70G last month in my smallish town house lounge. 3.2m x 4.6m I'm projecting a 100" screen. I used to sit 2 meters from my 42" in my old place, which was sufficient, but in my new house, the 42" looked so small when viewing from 4.3 meters. I wanted something bigger, but didn't want to fork out R20k+ for 60" plasma, so I decided to get the projector. Not regrets at all, I'm still in awe every time I watch a movie on it. Only con is, you need to be able to fairly control your ambient light with curtains etc. for day time viewing. Still, even with lots of daytime ambient light, it is still very watchable.

Did you have any focus issues? These models are known to have focus issues in the corners of the screen. If not, can you please supply the manufactured date of the unit. Also, where did you buy the unit?

Was just watching some reviews on YouTube about the LG PA70G and it looks like I will be getting one.

The upper left and bottom right corners have slightly less focus than other corners. Only really noticeable when there is text from my XBMCbuntu box in that corner, impossible to notice when video is playing. Manufactured July 2012, bought from Esquire.
