Full HD Samsung @ Game

I have a sony 40" LCD and the SD content through the dstv decoder is quite crap... Anyone else got this issue? I've got 2 days to deside to take it back and get the samsung PS42C430 instead. LCD is FHD, plasma is not... What should I do?

Don't say we didn't warn you. :D

Look, if you need full HD, then keep the LCD... But if SD TV/everything else is a priority, then plasma is better.

1080p MKVs look out of this world.

yes you need a media server for this setup look at the PS3 it works great. Also check out the Media8,AC Ryan and WD media servers.

I game a lot on my PS3, so you guys would still recommend plasma for gaming? Thanx for the input guys

Technically no. LCD is better for gaming. The argument of screen "burn" in will always arise when talking about gaming and plasma in the same sentence.

There is the chance your screen will burn in when gaming on a plasma, basically images that are left on the screen for to long don't go away and are "burnt" into the screen.

BUT I have never really seen or heard of anyone having a serious issue with this. Switch the TV off for a little bit and apparently all is good.

Well, you wouldn't want to display static images for more than 2 hours on a plasma to make sure you prevent burn-in, especially during the ±100 hours break-in stage. Static images i.e consoles/health/armour/mana etc. bars would be something to be concerned about. What you would have to do is pause every 1.5 hours or so, and go to the Menu > Picture Options > Burn-in Protection > and activate the "image sweeper" for a few moments.

Thankfully burn-in doesn't really concern people using the plasma as a TV, since static images and advertising logos etc. disappear during ad breaks.

Image retention aside, plasma is definitely better for gaming. It makes sense - faster response, richer colours, deeper blacks, etc.

So should I take the LCD back? Btw if Black Ops is running in 1080p, how is it going to look on the plasma @ 720p? Prob won't see a diffrence?

Plasma would definitely look better at 720p and have a better response time, but I guess it again comes down to personal preference. I'm not the sort of person to constantly keep track of time while I'm gaming. There are times when I do 4-5 hours continuously without even realising it, and usually pause to eat/drink/pee/smoke. When you're playing games that have health/armour/status bars then it can become a problem.

Just use the burn-in DVD for the first 200 hours or so and then all is well.

If it's a 2 hour + long movie on Dstv then what?

Besides the deeper blacks... :-s
...are you talking about LCDs vs PLASMAs in general here or specific models?

During the break-in, you'd probably want to run the screen cleaner to be cautious. As mentioned, after the break-in period, the chances of image retention are reduced. I would still run the cleaner though.

In general. Plasma is a better image quality technology in general.

Of course there are some LCDs that cost more that would match/better cheaper plasmas.

I'd be careful with that statement ;)

I'm sure you recall me taking a $800 dollar LCD outdoing a $500 and $1000 plasma ... or did did your mind erase the traumatic parts of losing? ;)

Perhaps you missed the part where I said "general". I'll save you the shame of comparing your cute little ratio to the ratio of plasmas that better LCDs...

Anyway - enough time has been wasted on this battle that's already been won.

People on this forum hate being proved wrong :/

Ok, long story short: I bought a 40" LCD - LA40C530
I was looking at the 40" series 5 LED but as it apparently it's only an 'edge-lit' LED but I decided the extra R3k didn't make sense. Also wet my lips over the 40" series 6 'back-lit' LED but the R17k price tag scared me off.
The Samsung salesman (with the rather stinky breath) tried to convince me to get a Full HD 50" Plasma (think it was R12k). He failed.

Gonna test out the PS3 and some HD rips tonight. Also keen to check the USB functionality.

Well you're obviously not using the TV for much TV/sport then, are you. :)

Enjoy the set!

Thanks! :)

My sport viewing will consist of only soccer matches as I don't watch any rugby/cricket etc. I checked out some soccer on Dstv SD last night and I must say it looks k@k - it actually was more 'viewable' on my previous 74cm CRT. I'm assuming Dstv HD will be much better? Most other Dstv SD channels were acceptable though.

Apart from that, I'm pretty pleased so far. GT5 and FHD bluray rips via the PS3 looks stunning. Also the tv's media player works very well - just plugged in my 2.5" ext HDD and it picked up everything except .m2ts files (the manual does state that they are not supported). Hope they can sort this with a firmware update. All in all... I are the happiness :)
