Hey guys. I am still waiting for money to come in for my first car. Have been thinking of getting the citi golf but have been told they are getting old. I was thinking of either getting a toyota tazz or a fiat uno. What are your guys opinions on all 3 cars. Good as well as bad points. Buying a car is not something that i can rush. All info will be appreciated.

At the risk of being flamed... I really like the soft ride the Hyundai Getz offers :D

The Getz is actually a really good car for what it is..

Saffer : how much you gonna have to spend?..

all three of the cars you're looking at are fairly old...

Seems like you really have a death wish!

I would say R20 000 to R30 000 at the very most. I know they old cars but am a very in experienced driver and i dont want such a powerful car. I like the getz but its too powerful for me right now and a bit pricey.

saffer : for R20k to R30k you can get a much newer design car.... something like a nissan sentra or something, not necessarily more powerful, but much much safer

Do not buy a golf!!!

They are getting stolen at an amazing rate, mine was stolen and I know 2 other people whose golfs were stolen.

At RAU(UJ) they have a special section with better security for golfs because of the amount of golfs stolen there.

Also do not buy an uno on account of it being a piece of crap.

Buy a TT , you can never go wrong with a toyota and the older ones go for quite cheap.

Look around on Autotrader, you can find something relatively new for that amount.

I was doing precisely the same thing HGP.. :)

Also saw the Astras, as well as a few Jetta's etc...

Also saw a few old E30 bmw's for a decent price... demmit, I am gonna have to buy one again and fix it up.... I love that car so damn much.

I'd say that '01 Corsa GSI is a bargain if it's not a code 3. If I were in the Western Cape I would have probably bought it :)

Safferbeauty, have a look on www.gumtree.co.za , there are lots to choose from in WC, and the site is updated daily. Good Luck

PS, try not to get a too high milage vehicle.

I think I'd go for the Opel, they all have fuel injection and they're quite nippy, engines are quite reliable (the engine itself, excluding the Ignition system, which is a piece of crap in my opinion)

Citi Golf is just problems all round.

As for Toyota Tazz, I can personally vouch for their reliability, although that is expected with a carburetor engine. They seriously lack in power department though.

Here is a Top Gear Top Tip: After you bought a second hand car, take it for a full service, replace all filters (relatively cheap), check the cam belt (very important), check the brakes and if necessary, replace the oil, this service will cost you less than a R1000, but rather be safe than sorry . . .
