Galaxy Note9

Something cheaper (Nokia 7 Plus, P20 Lite??)
.

Note 8.

There is no reason to get the 9 if you can still get an 8.

(Edit: just read you wont use the S-Pen, which is the only reason to get the note instead of the regular galaxy, so just get a S9.)

Okay so this is a bit off topic but would like some help.

My MTN contract is due for upgrade and I'm looking to get something a bit different this year.

I'm pretty invested in the Apple Ecosystem (iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch 3, Macbook Pro, Apple TV) so it is a bit difficult to imagine using something else at the moment, so advice is needed. I have been using iPhones for the last 3-4 years.

I am stuck between choosing which phone to get.
Note 9
S9 Plus
The new Huawei Mate 20 (to be released)
The new iPhones (to be released)
LG G7??
Something cheaper (Nokia 7 Plus, P20 Lite??)

My feeling so far is this, an Apple is an Apple, so if I get the new iPhone, iOS will still be iOS, and my "experience" wont be much different besides some new hardware features.

Then on the other hand I feel that it will be a waste to have 2 phones (I'm not looking to sell the iPhone because of ecosystem) which will offer more or less the same experience.

MTN has a nice deal with the S9 Plus where you get the Gear Fit2 with the phones (I like wearables, hence the Apple Watch)

The Note 9 seems nice due to the battery, but Ill probably wont even use half of its features (SPen etc)

Huawei's are nice but I have read about inconsistencies regarding camera and quality overall etc

SO at the moment the S9 seems like my only option. I am also concerned about future software updates due to Samsungs not so great track record with updates.

Maybe start a new thread, otherwise we going to end up derailing this thread.

I ordered the Note 8 on the day the Note 9 was being announced because I thought the contract fee would be too expensive. Note 8 was coming in at R799p/m and then when I saw the MTN deal on the Note 9 for the same price I hastily cancelled the 8. Yes it will be on the lower tier package but I can live with that.

The Note 8 has been marked down to R499 on MTN

Yes. On the small package. 50mins and 350mb. I added 100mins and 2gigs which totalled R799

DisplayMate: Samsung Galaxy Note9 has the best display ever

Everyone interested in mobile phones knows that Samsung makes one of the best - if not the best - OLED panels. Every Samsung flagship for years has offered great viewing experience, so no wonder every OEM wants to get its hands on the Korean firm's crisp OLED displays.

But how good is the recently announced Galaxy Note9's panel? Well, according to DisplayMate, it's the best so far. Just like every Samsung flagship since the Note 4. For yet another year the Korean company has managed to outdo itself.

As always, the Note9 went under extensive testing and broke a few records along the way. Well, "a few" is an understatement. One of the key findings in the review says that the panel reaches a maximum brightness of 710 nits in manual mode and 1,050 nits in automatic mode. It also covers 113% DCI-P3 and 142% of the sRGB color space and has the highest absolute color accuracy.

Interestingly, the Note9's display offers the lowest reflectance (4.4%) ever recorded as well. We wonder if this has something to do with one of the earliest rumors regarding glass thickness of the front panel.

Anyway, here's what the Note9's display is best at:

- Highest Absolute Color Accuracy (0.5 JNCD) – Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect.
- Smallest Change in Peak Luminance with the Image Content APL (2 percent).
- Smallest Shift in Color Accuracy and Intensity Scale with the Image Content APL (0.7 JNCD).
- Highest Peak Display Brightness (1,050 nits with 710 nits at 100% APL).
- Largest Native Color Gamut (113% DCI-P3 and 142% sRGB / Rec.709).
- Highest Contrast Ratio (Infinite).
- Lowest Screen Reflectance (4.4 percent).
- Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light (239).
- Smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle (27 percent at 30 degrees).
- Smallest Color Variation of White with Viewing Angle (1.3 JNCD at 30 degrees).
- Highest Screen Resolution 3K (2960x1440) – 4K Does Not appear visually sharper on a Smartphone.

I'm still thoroughly loving the display on my Note8, can only imagine how much better the Note9 display is.

One of the features I will always appreciate in Samsungs is the Video Enhancer feature, it activates in apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Video app etc... it bumps up the Brightness and vividness of the display quite a bit, and sets these phones apart from everything else when playing video.

I'm expecting the S10 to be the true game changer but I've still ordered the Note 9. The S pen is the fundamental reason why.
Rumours have it the S10 might get an S pen but...not gonna wait.

Wife is upgrading now to Note 9, so she can't wait, i will get Note 10 next year, not so sure about the bending phones that will come out next year, could be something one day, but will have to see them first.

Anyone know when the Note 9 will hit our shores? Still the 24th? or is it now September? Seems the wife is less patient than me O_o

As expected, the Galaxy Note 9 beat all the other devices and by a pretty large margin. It lasted 5 hours and 21 minutes which is pretty far from the second placer, the Huawei P20 Pro which drained itself almost 30 minutes before the Note 9 ran out. The OnePlus 6 was 3rd while the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone X had just 3 minutes between them before they eventually ran out of juice.
