xda-developers.com They have custom firmware and stock firmware of most devices there. As always read everything, a brick is easy on any device if you rush into it. :)

Thanks for the links guys, I'll check them out. It's actually for a friend who upgraded to Jelly Bean and has been having endless hassles. He has tried to downgrade, but with every firmware he has tried the phone gets stuck on the logo when booting it.

Flash it with supernexus rom , 4.4.2 kitkat ,its basically a stock nexus 5 rom ,really works well on my s3!

I went to that sammobile and the download site was one of those free, speed restricted downloads - after 5 hours I rebooted and couldn't resume, so I'd need to start a new download and got bored.

Can I get a link NOT speed restricted?

Also - does loading firmware depend on the way it was loaded before, or not? I gave my phone to someone ages ago to load custom firmware and I'm not sure what he has changed, Would it make any difference - bootloaders, firmware, bios or anything he may have touched?

Yes, it does. You better hope he didn't mess with the partitions!

He probably didn't mess with the partitions. Just custom ROM and bootloader. Can't you ask him to help you out again?

Else, you are going to have to look for a stock-based ROM on XDA that comes with a bootloader too. Atleast then you can find assitence there if needed.

Oh, and remember to do a complete wipe/factory reset before flashing the new ROM

He was at my old office :(

Partitions doesn't sound like a word he used

Is a bootloader like BIOS on a PC?

It's so complex :/

Seems like every minute detail could lead to a brick. I've now found out about EFS backups which can lead to a semi brick.

They really should make the upgrades easier :/

Is firmware different to the OS?
So you have a bootloader, firmware and OS?
