Hi Everyone,

I bought a 2TB Samsung G3 external drive from Game about a month ago. It recently just stopped working. One day I turned the PC on, and the drive didn't power up. I tried different cables (both usb and another power cable from another G3) and still its just dead. It could be the drive inside, though more likely, its the SATA<->USB adapter board thingie.

So anyways, this drive is going to be used to backup photo's and 1080p video from my DSLR. Luckily I didn't loose any data yet, as I still have everything on my main PC as well. Now I'd like to return this drive and get either a refund or a new drive. I don't want them to open it up, fix it and return it to me, because I won't ever feel at ease trusting the drive. I know if its just the USB-SATA board that's damaged, then the drive is probably fine, and I could even open it up and just use the drive internally, but what I need is an external Back-up drive that I can keep away safely.

The box says 3 year limited warrenty. And the tagline on the front is "Safeguard your Memories" lol. That's exactly what I want to use it for... safeguarding memories... and I've had drives fail on me, so I want the peace of mind of a new drive and not a "failed-once-then-repaired" drive.

So, can I demand a new drive? I don't mind a Game voucher even, then I'll buy what ever drive they have available if they don't have an exact replacement in stock.

Yes you may ask for a replacement.
Take it in with the receipt and request it be replaced.
With CPA (since April 2011) have up to 6-months to either a) allow them to repair it (which they really can't with a drive), b) request a replacement or c) request a refund.

The Consumer Protection Act allows you to return it for a full refund or replacement.

I don't think you will have any issues as I have read elsewhere on MyBB that Game is quite good in honouring warranties and the like.

never had an issue returning to game, op should be fine.

Game is ALWAYS an issue with getting a refund. They will tempt you with vouchers or offer to repair, but will refuse cash.

they will give you a money voucher if you can provide proof of purchase, which u can exchange for cash at the till.
if u dont have pop, u get a gift voucher or gift card.

No, the voucher I'm talking about can only be exchanged in the shop.

Same here, never had an issue getting a refund or exchange (whichever I preferred).

There is no repairing the drive, and if it is an interface board, then replaced is as good as new.

Besides you say this will be a backup, so you wouldn't lose anything unless it and your main drive failed simultaneously.
