Hey guys, I've been using PingFu for the last year or so for WoW EU but it has started failing me in the last month or so. Could you guys recommend a good alternative VPN. What's Gamemax like? I use iBurst btw.

One question...Why use a VPN? I'm playing on WoW EU as well and dont see a need for a VPN.

ps. Why not ask this question in your other post you started complaining about the WoW servers? http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=179601 And now you saying your VPN software is failing you?

Sorry im in a bad mood because my monday morning started with Tea. :erm:

The problem with running WoW through a VPN is, you run the risk of being banned temporarily or even permanently. This is due to the change in country related IP address. Using Gamemax, your international IP address is unique and when you try another, it is sometimes vastly different. Blizzard interpret this change as a hacker gaining access to your account.

You're forgiven :) Well my iBurst connection seems "ok" at the moment without using a VPN(600-700 ms) but this is still not "ok" for me as I need 350-400ms to play properly. PingFu hikes up my ms to around 1000 now which will just not do. You'll see that my previous thread has become a strange, new beast of its own and a place where my question is unlikely to get answered.

I think I'll try lowerping

hmmm, so using a VPN betters your ping? (sorry i dont understand how it could seeing its a game. :P ) If it works i seriously would give it a go though. I'm on vodacom 3g. but i have pings of average 300 to 400. lately there have been some issues with the servers so i dont see how a VPN will work. :P

Well Jono, that's kind of why companies like Gamemax exist :D
They basically reroute your gaming traffic to their servers and then send it on via a more direct route with less "hops" between routers and thus less latency.

Actually while somehow correct its not entirely true.

What really happen is, your traffic to them goes over SSH protocol, which usually gets a higher priority on most ISP's networks. Once it gets to Gamemax for example, they use datacentre traffic, which are almost never shaped at all and from there goes to the WoW servers. Usually your traffic now goes over MORE hops than it used to. The difference is, it goes over better unshaped bw.

Unfortunately SAIX shaped and unshaped terms cant be compared, since they dont really shape their shaped accounts, instead they shaped accounts routes over hongkong while their unshaped accounts route over SAT3 via london, and is mostly the reason for people to have better latency on their unshaped accounts.

I use Gamemax and don't have any problems in arenas and general play. I have seen problems in Wintergrasp and 25-man instances but can't be sure that it wasn't my connection playing up. Generally I connect without Gamemax if doing the occassional pve.

I stand corrected. Thanks for clearing that up :D

I can't seem to ping Gamemax's servers: pamela.gamemax.org, angelina.gamemax.org and denise.gamemax.org. Are they down or is it just me?

Must be you :)

Lately I am having problems with Gamemax, going to try Lowerping but might go to PingFu as I have a good experience during the last trial period with them.

what would be nice if an isp can provide this service as part of your cap. on the other hand if you actually know enough of linux, routing and tcp you can diy.

I used to use Gamemax and tried to get it working 100%, but never could (It always failed me on 25 man raids) - Some say its 'fixed' now,

BUT I have been using Lowerping since Feb and raiding seriously with it, meaning 25 man content and I have not had 1 problem with it.

OP = Saix based unshaped + lowerping
Very decent these days = Afrihost + lowerping (300ms for the most part) + its cheap!

I've used Gamemax and Lowerping and both kept disconnecting in 25man raiding...I'd rather have my latency shoot up to 1500ms in 25man than get disconnected.

I haven't had any issues with latency the last 2 weeks though. Just FPS issues, but everyone gets that :p
