Hey guys, I've got a little bit of a problem...

Me and my flatmate got ourselves ADSL together (384kbps), but I got it mostly for playing COD2, while he NEVER EVER stops downloading stuff...

This results in pings @ +-600ms to games.saix.net

Is there any way we can still let him download while I play games at normal latency?

(The IDEAL would be if I could PERMANENTLY limit BOTH our connections to 20kB/s or 192kbps) - Would this work?

Even if you limit him your latency will still be higher than usual, but it should be better if he isn't maxing out the line.

Check out the General Broadband section, a few people have asked about bandwidth limiting programs.

They're all recent, just go load the General Broadband section, should be one or two threads on the subject.

If you both are paying for the line, then you can have a 'clean' line for 12 hours a day, can't you? He can download the other 12 hours. Really simple.

Find out if your router supports qos service then you can limit his downloading while your playing and when your not his downloading will go up again

Suggested it to him, his reply was : "OK, but we'll then arrange the price we pay, you pay 80% of our total and we've got a deal"
He's not the type of guy that can see reason in anything

I can't pay 0.8xR345 + 0.8x(R121+R250) = R572.80
Think my best option would just then be to move out....

Will this work in bridged mode?
Could you maybe help me with the setup plz?
I've got a Telkom Mega 100WR router (as I said, running in bridged mode)
Oh, and could anyone maybe explain what qos is and how it works?

Have you tried playing hard ball with your flat mate by telling him if you can't play games then the ADSL line is useless to you and he will have to pay for the whole line if he wants to continue downloading.

I'm pretty sure routers can't do QOS when using bridged connections. I think you both have to be using the routers single pppoe connection.

This sucks, I still don't know what qos is, but if I can find any way to set a "top priority" to games.saix.net on the router(bridged mode) that would be great..????

I still could'nt find a post concerning "limiting-linespeeds" - So you guys think it won't be any good to try and limit each computer's downloads to 20kB/s???

QoS = Quality of Service. It's a method of tagging data packets so that your router can assign a priority.

First result when i google "QOS" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service

Unfortunately because your flat mate and you are using 2 separate PPPOE connections to the net you cannot prioritise data. You will have to get your flatmate to limit his download speed on his pc when you are playing games using an app like netlimiter. If he doesn't coperate then there is nothing you can do.

Basically, because we share a 384kbps line, I'd ideally like to PERMANENTLY limit BOTH our connections to 384/8=48 , 48/6*5=40. 40/2=20kB/s

If he's downloading@20kB/s would I still get my normal ping to games.saix.net, or would I still lag?

He's the kind of guy that starts a download, then goes to class, lock his room, so I can't pause his download or anything...

no no, dont move out. just threaten him that you are going to have the line disconnected.

You can load netlimiter app on both pc's and permanently limit your your internet connections to 20k. You will still have a slightly higher latency but it shouldn't be anywhere near as bad as when the line is maxed out. Do a test to see.

where is the router located?
if it isnt in his room, the answer is simple... unplug his lan cable... screw him, he sounds like the kind of guy that deserves it anyway

me and a neighbour shared DSL, and we were both able to play BF2 on one 384 line. so i reckon running at 20KB/s should be sufficient

I did that a few times last last week, and Monday when we got a maid (which I paid), he refused to give me his half of her fee.
I was looking for a fair solution, but seeing how you guys also feel it's unfair has just made me mad all over again, I'm telling him I'm setting up a roster according to which we're going to use the Internet, if he doesn't abide, I'm giving up our line....

as much as i hate to say it, but giving up the line might be the only way to deal with this plonker...

i sincerely hope that you would be able to afford the line on your own rather. stuff this flat mate.
