Games for LAN

+1 for Source. Hate GO, not a fan of skins

Strategy:
Battle for middle earth 2 + rise of the witch king expansion.

MMO:
League of Legends, Smite, Dota 2 or HotS. If new to the genre pick LoL/Smite. All online though.

Mount and Blade is also fun. Can play offline + bots, doesn't use that many system resources as well.

Babo violence II, used to play it at school. Was like 20MB? Was huge for my 128MB flash :D

What kind of games? Co-op of vs or both?

We used to LAN on Counterstrike and Battlefield2 for years and years. Throw in some racing games like NFS underground 1 & 2 where we'd do 4 player drag races etc.
 
Borderlands is a lot of fun with 3 other friends, so is Torchlight. If it's a large number of people, something along the lines of Counter Strike.
 
For racing games, Split/Second was a fun one, I can't remember if Blur had LAN but I think I played it with some friends back when it came out, if it does then it should be fun for everyone.
 
For free MMOs, Guild Wars 2 (with some limitations: no expansions, limited trade with players).

co-op mostly, as they aren't really gamers at all, so something where I'll be able to carry them :)

Co-op:
- Left 4 Dead 2 (+8player mod)
- Rainbox Six Vegas 1 (+8player mod)
- CnC Generals
- No More Room In Hell

Face-off:
- Half Life 1 :)
- CoD4 knife only on shipment, 10 minutes
- TrackMania NationsForever

Fun:
- Rocket League
- Gang Beasts
