Hi all,

I used to live in south africa more than a decade ago and back in the days everyone gathered on the games.saix.net forums. Why did the site close? Where did everybody go ? I can't even find the mweb forums. The gaming community used to be extremely close-knit, I could join a server and basically know half the people playing and where they lived. How did everything disappear ?

Thanks,

Skullnick

Hey Skullnick,

I'm also an old games.saix.net user. Do you remember the SGS Forums? Man, those were days!

Sadly Telkom / SAIX transitioned the SGS service to a new name (DoGaming), which was essentially an online based league in SA for various games. Over the years, DoGaming eventually became VS Gaming (as it is known today). Sadly no more forums exist for it.

To relieve some of the old times, I visit the site using the Wayback Machine. The last time the site was archived was in 2015. Have a look over here: https://web.archive.org/web/*/games.saix.net

Vintage SGS home page: https://web.archive.org/web/20050216042355/http://games.saix.net/

Forums: https://web.archive.org/web/20040603144334/http://games.saix.net/cgi-bin/sgsbb/ikonboard.cgi

I even remember some of the old users, like TygerBS, AnthraxZA (which runs Mettlestate.com) and Lt.Reboot who played for the [**] clan. Fun times indeed

Wow, I remember that forum. Over the decades they come and go. Forums that used to be active that have died away that I was on:

Gamersvault (20 + years back)
prophecy
evilsod

Think I forgot one or two as well. Always interesting to see how things change as they roll along.

Those saix forums were so ridiculous :D

I remember for about a week, tons of battlefield players changed their avatars to 'sexy' things.
It got so out of hand that infy had to reset everyones gifs haha

Old times indeed... those were the best times. Good Old SAIX gaming.

Back when avatars were web links, consuming somebodies precious bandwidth, only to be changed by web devs to dirty porn pics which ultimately got that forum user banned.

Jeez what a blast from the past, forgot that ever existed, had some interesting conversations on there back in the day!!

Hi Vick,

I remember UBS quite well and Bor9!

I didn't play for 1st but had my own clan at the time called HF (Have Fun). Really miss the vibe of the SGS forums. Used to spend hours on there

Zolmaster checking in.

Honestly, apart from the fact that services changed or died, I think the community fragmentation was bound to happen at some point just due to the amount of people who are in it now. Like, back in the day the online art community was tiny and everyone found each other through a small SA group on Deviant Art. Today there's dozens of smaller little local art scenes online, and some of them will never meet. It's pretty much the same thing for games.

this was the best period in SA gaming. Especially BF2 days. Spent way too much office hrs on those forums.
The community even put money together to buy servers for battlefield.

played as nrg_wp for ATD/BFC and eventually ASF

Indeed as a student I too spent way too many hours on the SGS forums. I still remember the BFC clan. Used to fly Bull around with air transport in BF2142. And ASF (advanced special forces) if I recall correctly? They dominated the BF games.
