I’m recently having extreme latency problems while playing World of Warcraft on a 512kbps ADSL line and Telkom ISP. About a month or 2 ago I played with 2 other people connected to my modem and all three of us had latencies of 400ms. Since last week while playing alone my latency jumps up to 4000ms and the connection is very unstable. My overall HTTP, FTP and POP3 functions remain very fast. Now I do realize that the shaped cap does not necessarily prioritize for gaming related functions, but currently I have better lag while playing over a 56K dial-up modem. Anyone also experiencing these problems let me know!

Kabraal - Welcome to MyAdsl!

To my knowledge gaming ports are viewed as nonstandard by Telkom and may receive lower priority when the ADSL network is under load. No service level guarantees are also made on Telkom ADSL for gaming.

HTTP and POP/SMTP are given higher priority under load.

Personaly I believe Telkom purposfully degrades all access on these ports to "force" people to buy "unshapped" packages.

 I agree! Something is not right. I’m no expert when it comes to high-speed connections but I do know that the transfer rate for World of Warcraft is about 2MB a hour. How this can possibly put strain on their network I do not know. Just tell what the rules are for a dial-up? Because it seems that there is no problem connecting to European WOW servers using a proper dial-up connection. Lastly might I add that while patching the game (P2P), which is also done from the same WOW network on which I play, I get download speeds of 50KBps and transfer about 20MB in 10mins. Why this speed does not translate when I’m playing the game (for which I require only a mere 2MB per hour)…I do not know…

I've been having the same problem with FFXI and Guild Wars. My 56k modem gives me faster speeds but when I try to download a game demo, I get 20-30 kbs. Really strange...

Same here the whole weekend i have been trying to play wow can say i played, more like trying not to die 'cause of lag, lol

But ya i use 192 and i just logged in and im on 6971 ms and that's just not right.

Everybody must of hear this or even tryed but is there nothing we can do???

Is telkom really dumd that they dont pay attantion to us game'rs we also pay the same amout as all the other ppl that use it for http and e-mail.

Is there no hope for us....

lol, that not no right i want to undestand im to quisy not to just ok and leave it..

mwehehe well lets just keep this convo goin and we can get this thread some uptime, maybe just maybe even find something out.....

haha that's not funny anymore " ;) " i wanted to play wow but my lag is over 16000 ms now so ya this convo has my full attention lol...

My name is ADSL I am shaped.
Just got Guildwars as this is supposed to use almost no bandwidth. Got plenty rude awakening as lag just totally made it unplayable for me. OK back to drawing board so started doing the good techie thing: -- now pings perfect, 0 dropped packets, mtu optimized, rwin tweaked for international latency. = Gaming SUCKS. (just stays unplayable for client that hardly generates any traffic --aarggggh)
Carry on the good fight ppl

yep i feel for you i really do.....gaming might be trivial to some.....but you cant give someone something for a price and then take it away without re-imbursing them
wowowowowow
lol

so far it's been after 12pm til l about 6am the morning but ya there's no use complaining because no one hears u anyway lol ;)

Do u pplay wow??

Gets me that gaming is being done in by bandwidth restricted shaping especially when in this case it generates low rates of throughput (2+ MB per hour). Hell, cap me if I reach my bandwidth limit or force me to buy more just dont throttle my use dammit.

small rant done plenty more to come lol
