Gaming & ADSL

Its just not viable, blizzard etc wont allow u to host a server here, because its a mmorpg, that depends on the entire network working in unison, with equivilant latency's to each other. We will never ever have official game servers in this country because of the price, the latency, and the fact their arnt enough ppl in the sub-african continent to make it worthwhile. The only way we will get better latency is for telkom to stop shaping us, and start using the full extent of the sat-3 and sat-1 cable systems, as currently they are only running at 40% capacity.

I have an artical in front of me from PCFORMAT in the UK. A South African wrote to them about why the latency in South Africa is so bad their reply was, "

For most people, the last hop from the ISP to their house is a significant bottleneck so broadband speeds up their connection. But you are in South Africa. To reach web sites overseas, you have to route through the SAT2 and SAT3 cable systems or use a sattelite link.

Bandwidth through soem of these cables is restricted to 400mbit/s, which isnt much when you consider it is shared between all the concurrent users and sattelite links induce latency problems of their own because of the extra distance traveled"

I'd just like to point out that Telkom owns 39% of the main SAT cable and each of these cables has 150 fibres each capable of 1gbit/s, thats 150gbit/s per SAT cable. How can Telkom justify limiting the cpacity of these Cables?.

Hence why at the end of the month (when everyone tries to blow their caps) and in the beginning of the month (when the people who where capped now start there international P2P progs) gaming for any south african SUCKS!

Ihatetelkom

i just wanted to say i have the same problem with World of warcraft. I have been playing with 400 - 900 ms since i got ADSL 384k untill last week that is and now I get about 4000ms average and at very best 1300ms, worst can be 15000ms. I think this disgusting what telkom has done to us. I now can't play wow with this lag, it isn't really possibal. This is not at all fair!! Telkom i always hated you now i think you one Mother ****ing **** of a company.

Dont worry, things are set to change real soon. 4weeks time and the new legeslation will be written up by ICASA and then Telkom will be in a right prediciment. ( They brought this all on themselves )

I saw last night that my whole server was lagged to hell and back. It was not just me it was the whole server. Everyone was complaining about it taking 2 min to sell things to vendors in IF. So while I think the new patch might have something to do with the WoW lag.. the lag did start before the patch on tuesday

I was going to get Adsl for gaming but after reading this forum I can now say that that will not happen. I currently have a 128 ISDN but I created to seperate 64k from 2 pc. I did play renegade ( for people that does not know it is fps) with 200 to upper 300 ms ping was US based server. I now play warcraft and the other pc normaly plays diablo and on both connects my ping is never more that 300ms unless the server lags. I may not have the download speed of adsl but then I only play games. I have and still do also played games like freespace, halflife, quake 2, tribes and a few others on my ISDN line and on most eurepean servers I almost never have lag problems, US servers it all depends on the host of the game as most us servers have lag problems of there own. If I can get my pal to bring his pc to my house I will test my con with WOW but will not count on it. On avg any game I played on Blizzard servers I almost never have lag problems. Also on comment made by sburrell - if i remember right Blizzard had a African hosted server ( can not remember if it was in SA) in the early days of Diablo II and on the height of Starcraft but the bandwith sponsor pulled out and server was shutdown. As most of there bandwith if sponsored by BIG telecom companys.

I was wondering where you guys still having problems playing Guildwars on Adsl for I was wondering if I should go through all the trouble of getting the game. I dont want to get it and then wont be able to play it.

Still extremely crappo during daytime for me on 512k shaped. Perfect with 56k modem though if thats an alternative.

erm, its not really an alternative, since it costs more to dial up every single night than to use ADSL (just a little less). And if you already have ADSL then you would be insane to use dial up for that and JUST that... maar nou ja, to each his own hey :)

enjoy local gaming, its all we can do in this third world country... is there anything lower than third world?

goon on you. dial up is for third world countries. oh wait :(

Guess its time to return to a relative cheap service, unlimited downloads and smooth gaming aka 56k hehehehe Viva La Banana Republicque
