gaming headsets

I have the Zalman 5.1 as well and it sounds terrible, they just lying in my cupboard and I'm using my Sony Home theatre, but late nights are not working with the explosions etc.

Thats why I am a little anxious to buy another set, I would rather spend money and get a excellent quality set than buy another R600 set and chuck them in the cupboard to rot.

Does anyone know the max power handling of the 595's at 50ohms and also the mac power output of the Xonar d2 at 50ohms. Alot of people are saying they don't need to be amped however the Xonar STX only has a power output of 140mw and I imagine the D2 would be less, so based on that I would think it most likely will need to be amped.

sennheiser may not be 5.1.. but the quality of sound u hear is so so much better than razer.. rather take quality over gimmicky "5.1" headset from a mouse manufacturer

I just got the USB Microsoft LX3000 yesterday for R369, was gatvol of my onboard soundcard mic-in BS.

Been an absolute pleasure so far..

AFAIK Razor headsets are re branded Sennheiser, not sure about now but there was definitely one set that was.

Guys the Steel Series Siberia v2 :D you can't go wrong, amazing headset and extremely comfortable

I think I should change the heading to audiohpile quality HEADPHONES that also work excellently for gaming.

I am getting used to the idea of a clip on mic, im starting to realise that if I sound bad its fine as long as what i am hearing is top notch. but hmmmm the reviews are very difficult to read as one site says the sennys are great and the next says theyre terribble,

please focus on the fact the budget is 3k :)

anyhoe thanx for all the replies thus far

I use the HD595 with a Xfi Creative Xtreme Gamer, and I can't push the volume to max or I blow my ear drums.

HD 595 > HD 555 > PC 350. The PC350 is based upon an aviation headset so the frequency response is a bit different and the bass is a tad higher as well as having better noise reduction.

However keep in mind that all of these headsets are all 50ohm. Not 300ohm like the HD650 or higher. As such they run perfectly off a standard sound card. For gaming those sennies pip ANY 5.1 / 7.1 headsets. I have used the piranha the G35 and the Zalman, and positional audio as well as quality is FAR better on ANY pair of sennies.

Simple question, buy headphones from a headphone compnay? Or from a Peripheral company... simple question really.

This is why Im saying the 5.1 headphones are a gimmick. I have a set of sennheiser HD 555's and you can EASILY determine where the sound is coming from(front back side or even 3:15 :D). You should try and read up if you can on good headsets for gaming and not necessarily "gaming headsets" :)

:p

Those audiophile headphones do looks nice, also it has a very nice price :D

I have the Cybasniper 5.1 it has about 6 speaker all together I think with a mic and very comfortable.

The price is not to shabby either.

Final Decision, going once, going twice .....

Thanks for all the responses. They are greatly appreciated

so the list is down to 3 choices (please don't look at cost only performance)

1.) audio technica ath ad700
2.) HD 595
3.) PC 350

on option 1 and 2 obviously a clip on mic will be used namely the fantastic zalman 5.1 lol.

so make ur choices gentleman :D

Personally it is either of the Sennies.

I don't mind if my mic doesn't sound that GREAT cause I don't hear myself. As long as I am clear and my teamies can hear the calls I am happy. In addition the 350's have that leather cushioning which personally makes my ears hot. The 595's on the other hand is that fabric stuff that breathes easier.

I don't have any experience with the audio technica's but any Senny user can vouch for their awesomeness. In addition from first hand experience, with a decent sound card and those 595's I hear more than anyone else on my COD4 team (we placed 2nd at rAge this year so I know what I am talking about :P)

Well if they are comparable to the 650 and I know for a fact that the 650 > 595 (however you do need a pre-amp for them as they are 300ohm, as such I use the 595 and NOT the 650 for my PC) I would go for the AudioTechnica

Either way you won't be disappointed with any of those sets. They are all awesome, and I just am not a fan of a pair of headphones with a microphone, I can't wear them on a plane or when travelling (just personally of course)

As I said though, I don't think either of the 3 will disappoint you. Just see if you can't try them on in a store somewhere and make your final choice based on comfort and giving them a bash.

If you anywhere in Jhb and like LANning you can give my 595's a try at the next LAN which is MPLD (In Centurion)

Thanks buddy, I am a bit far away, down in lil old Richards Bay, thats why i am battling. No one here stocks anything high end, you mention R2K headphones and they look at you like you on drugs. :D

the audio technica are 32ohm so i rate they will have ample play power on the xonar, but I will wait and see if there are and local guys who have heard a set.

Friday is pay day :D so got till then to think about it.

Man, i'm also looking for a new set.
Which ones did u go for? And where did u buy it?

Thx mRY

Been doing some research too... Go for the AD700, they come very highly recommended especially for games. Let us know what they sound like when you get them!

Well freaking update us!! What did you get? What do you think? How many pairs of pants did you ruin!

I know when I got my 595's I upgraded from a pair of Senny PC 151's. It was like going into a new world. Especially for positional sound.
