Hi Guys,

Just got the xonar d2 card now I need an upgrade on the tins.

1.razer barracuda HP-1
2.sennheiser pc350

Those are the two I have been looking at, the razer's seem more appealing as they are 5.1

Please note I am looking for a gaming headset, therefor with attached microphone and closed headset so there is no noise seeping out into the house :)

price is not the problem right now, was looking at the sennheiser 595 but they are only stereo and no mic, so gaming becomes an issue and it kinda wastes the sound card.

so what you all think?

hd595? I have a set and it works great for me? my earphones runs through a normal sound out-put

Yeah, but then i have to use a seperate mic, and the zalman mic i have sux.

and its also stereo which kinda wastes the sound card i just bought.

so I am kina leaning towards the Razer, but i would like to hear from someone who has listened to a set.

I currently have the zalman 5.1 so in comparison to them, would it be a wase of an upgrade.

Best person to ask here would be Rift, who knows quite a bit. 5.1 surround sound headphones are a gimmick more than anything else as far as Ive read. Pretty much like dynamic contrast on LCD monitors.
I would however strongly consider the sennheisers, they are just yum :)

+1 for sennheisers!

I have a Xonar D2/PM and use my Sennheisers.
I used to have Zalman 5.1 but like everyone on the internet - it's a waste.

The Dolby Headphone tech on the D2 is more than adequate enough. Not only that, but the quality of sound from a good set of headphones is more important than the perceived surround sound.

Honestly, I have used many a speaker set, a good set of stereo headphones, coupled with a good soundcard (the one you have is very good) is audio nirvana.
:)

What about the Logitech G35? Altho depends on your budget

They are nice and all but I would rather go for the sennies. That said, if he is looking at the PC350's then the logitech G35's are definitely within his budget :p

Why is 5.1 surround sound a gimmick?

It is theoretically virtual surround sound when through headphones.
There is no way to replicate the a proper 5.1/7.1 system through using a 2 speaker one.

You cannot reduce a speaker system using 6/8 speakers, and have the EXACT same audio dynamism.

Ca't happen. The closest is Dolby's virtual surround system called Dolby Virtual Speaker (for 2 speakers) and Dolby Headphone.

I think I'm gonna go for the PC350 then, but then when playing BF2 will you still be able to differetiate between sounds in front of you, behind you etc?

That is the only real reason for wanting 5.1, to easily determine where the fool is I wanna pawn ;)

I really think my Sennheiser HD 555's are excellent gaming earphones. They sound brilliant

This is why Im saying the 5.1 headphones are a gimmick. I have a set of sennheiser HD 555's and you can EASILY determine where the sound is coming from(front back side or even 3:15 :D). You should try and read up if you can on good headsets for gaming and not necessarily "gaming headsets" :)

Awesome indeed:D

If I take the 595's I then sit with a problem of needing a headphone amp to run them properly, theres no way the xonar will push those tins.

and the second problem is what do I do for a mic, everyone says use the zalman clip on, but I have one and it sux. so thats my second problem.

I am pretty much sold on the pc350's but have read about 30 reviews over the past few days and they all say the pc350's are not worth the money and reccomend the razers. so hmmmmm and with the pc350's you have the pre-amp problem again.

I could be wrong about the above but from all the forums thats what I have gathered. I have bought so many headsets and none that I am happy with so I am very nervous about this buy, plus im buying online so dont have the luxury of testing the tins first. sorry if im being a pain but its alot of cash to just throw down and hope for the best.

Push those tins?

Um, sorry to surprise you, but the Xonar has plenty of pre-amp power going on.
The Burr-Brown DACs are of almost extreme quality too. :)

The Xonar is more than up to the task.

Don't worry, it will be more like your ears having a problem of keeping up...
:D

K, so i will be ordering the HD-595's, but would I get a better sound adding a headphone amp between the xonar d2 and the 595's, or would it be a waste just wondering can order one at the same time if it would give a better sound.

I have the Zalman 5.1 set and the Razer Barracuda's..

I like the Zalmans' sound quality more than the Razers', but the mic on the Razers' forces me to rather play with that.

PS - If you go to lans etc, the Razers suck because although its deemed to be closed-ear, you can still hear everything going on around you, whilst the Zalmans locks out other noises.

I'd recommend the Speedlink Medusa 5.1 set - used it once, loved it.
If you have too much cash to burn, get the PC350s.
