Hi,

I realize this might be a silly question, but though it might be worth it to double check...

I am keen on getting a gaming laptop, but want to connect it to an external monitor.I looking at getting the Acer GX-792-77LG as this has a 1080 card in it.

So, if i connect a decent wide screen 32inch to it that runs at 3840x2160 is this going to be an issue? Is there some sort of limitation on the the 1080/1070 cards on laptops that will give me an issue? Is there some sort of pitfall i'm not seeing?

Most of the gaming laptops i have looked at run at 1920*1080 on their supplied monitors, hence the question. Just want to make there is not some sort of limitation. (Pretty sure there is not, but don't want to shell out $$ 's and then be stuck.

Thanks
Roddy

Right side: 2x USB-C 3.1, 2x USB 3.0, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, Kensington lock

If you look at the Acer website, you will see the above. DisplayPort will have no issue with outputting that res. Just make sure that your monitor has DisplayPort, which if it is 4k, then I am certain it will.

One thing you need to bare in mind, is whether you think a 1080 will be enough to drive 4k. Do your research, you dont want to be stuck with a laptop that cant game at the required performance on your 4k resolution.

Thanks Techead. I took note of the displayport, but wanted to ensure that in general there is not some sort of issue i am overlooking. (like manufactures only supporting the laptops monitors native resolution via the display ports.)

From what i understand, the 1080 should happily run 4k for most games.

I have a Gigabyte laptop with a 980M, and plugged it into a 4k TV using HDMI so I could watch The International. It was able to output 4k fine, so I'm sure you'll be fine with an external monitor.

Displayport would be the better route of course.

Notebookcheck has a ton of comparisons with the laptop GTX 1080 with other cards, in all sorts of apps, games, and benches. Thought that might be useful for giving you an idea of how it would handle current games at 4k.

Thanks mr_norris.

Have run through notebookcheck. awesome site

I was a bout to scoff at the idea of a laptop running games at 4k, until I did some research, wow that is amazing.

Going to be a ball boiler though!
