I see lots of reviews are coming out this week on youtube with regards to the RTX 3000 series laptops.

Big issue seems to be the power(W) the GPU's receive as the manufacturers don't need to publish this and the Max-q / Max-p has fallen away. Best to check all reviews and benchmarks not just specs before buying.

I am not sure why all these youtubers and tech sites are making such a big hoo haa about it now. It has been tough differentiating between Max-q and "Max-p" since the inception of Max-q, whenever that was. I spent a ton of time last year trying to find the best AMD laptop with the highest wattage GPU, and it was frustrating. Things haven't really changed now, and it appears Max-q is still around:

Same problem as the 2000 series mobile GPUs. "Max-p" is anything after 70W.

At 8:30 they compare they battery life of laptops, this one should give just under 7 hours.

Quite a few review on youtube remember people raving about the Omen 15 last year

Bought this for my son for Christmas. Imported from the USA as the specs were a lot better for roughly the same price ( including duties & shipping ). Excellent laptop - very well built ! I just hope it lasts, as I basically have no warranty on it, but it's worth the risk for me.

Nice review. As for the battery, I am not really interested in how long I can watch a movie or surf the web. Would like to know how long the battery last actually using the CPU and GPU to its full potential as far as the battery allow. Not sure why they all test it on streaming or watching a movie. It is a gaming laptop, or at least a laptop built to do more than playing solitaire or candy crush.

Yeah, I saw the local machines don't have the same specs as those they review on YouTube. A common issue in South Africa.

You maybe test how long the battery last while pushing it to its limits?

Second video shows 2hr playing witcher3. If you run an artificial benchmark pegging cpu/gpu at 100% it's gonna be even less.

Sorry I missed it in the second one as I just quickly scanned that one.

@ponder @Fjorko

I would like to be able to view architectural models in Twinmotion and Lumion, maybe even Unreal Engine while on the go. Not so much for actually building the models, but be able to show a client their project or walkthrough the project discuss with other architects etc.. All those will probably be the same as running a game.

Would like to also test a Dell XPS or maybe even the ASUS ProArt StudioBook (Quadro, not gaming GPU). Although they are VERY expensive.

Why don't you log their load and compare it to a few games to get a better idea.

Wootware and Comutermania also have pricing up for some 30 series laptops.
I've ordered an Aorus 15P XC. When I get it, I can answer any questions I'm able to.

To start, it is the 115w variant (confirmed by wootware and the little bit of info I could find on this model through Google).

Nice, how much did you pay?

Edit: And then they still ship the stuff with Windows Home. Pathetic.

R36k :crying:
This is my first foray into gaming laptops, and wanted to try and get something that would last 5yrs. There is a notable voice urging people to shy away from Intel and move to the superior AMD processors (3rd and 4th gen). If you plan on using any gaming laptop for productivity, AMD is a clear winner. For gaming, the difference is not large.

That being said, the 15P is reasonably cheaper than any other 3070 laptop I've seen so far.

I do agree on Windows.... I am not sure how licensing at Gigabyte/ASUS/MSI etc works, but perhaps that is where a couple thousand was saved?

It was a choice between the two.
Yes I could have built a better desktop for the same price, but there were other factors (travel, portability).

After some lengthy discussions, my conclusion was why not try it once. When my next upgrade cycle comes, I can always change back to a desktop or stick with laptops if the benefits in my head materialize. Irrespective, it will be some good years before I need to make that decision which is also why it was a "mid - high spec" laptop.

Just a word of caution. I don't have much faith in the hinge design on Gigabyte / Aorus laptops. The hinge design looks very familiar to the design on my old Gigabyte P37X V5. I rate if anything were to give you issues in the long term, it would be those.

I have complained about my struggles on in this and other threads. The overall experience has left a sour taste in my mouth for anything Rectron / Gigabyte related.

Otherwise, without the dark cloud of dodge hinges hanging over me and the upkeep it still requires to this day, it has definitely served me well. It'll be 5 years old next month. It was primarily a studying and gaming laptop back in the day. Now because of the whole work from home thing, it's my work machine too. The ol 980M can more or less hold its own in games if you are not shy with turning things down to low settings.

Otherwise, you have bought a pimp laptop and I am a bit jealous :D

The one common thing I have read about the Gigabyte laptops, is their poor hinges. Most complaints I've seen for the Aorus range is the screen wobble.

Thanks for the word of caution - based on what I've read so far, I'll be more cautious around the opening/closing of the lid anyways.
