Hi,

New to the forum although i have been lurking for a while. I am looking at replacing my current notebook for a gaming notebook. Mainly used for gaming and video editing drone footage. I am buying on ebay as it's much cheaper than local Asus rog's. I have seen two notebook and not sure which one to go for. I like the idea of the SSD on the fz model. Which would be a better buy?

Thanks in advance :)

IMO, you are mad to buy something like a laptop from eBay. While it's a huge knock to buy locally, you at least get a local discount. Add shipping + import duties to that price and you'd be surprised how little you'd really be saving.

I'd go for something like this. Yes, it's like R3500 more, but you're getting a better CPU, better GPU, bigger screen, some goodies, and a local warranty.

I've got a RoG similar to the 2nd link you posted.

These are not notebooks by any stretch of the imagination. They're laptops - heavy ones too. The one norris posted is even worse - thats a 17 inch. All of which is not an issue as long as you're not going to be travelling a lot.

I'd also agree don't buy off ebay. Not only more risk but also you need to factor in VAT & customs.

17 Gaming laptops are heavy. For real, they are really heavy.

Thanks for the help, the seller on eBay assured me that it carries 1 year international warranty. As for customs fees it's about 2k as it ships via global shipping program. As for evetech, I was going to buy from there initially but read some bad stuff about their service. If I can find a reasonably priced entry level gaming notebook locally I will buy here.

Also look at Takealot and Wootware. My current gaming laptop is from Takealot, and I cannot be happier. I purchased a laptop from Wootware as well, also great service.

Thanks I will check it's out, sucks having a small budget for a gaming pc, I was considering a desktop but I want to be able to travel with it. Second hand is just too risky I would think.

m also looking for a new high end notebook for travel & lonley hotel room gaming. Thinking of getting the GT 73 VR from MSI but wondering if I should wait for the new INTEL chipset to be released. Any one know when they will be available in notebooks ?

I heard it's launching in Q1 next year, but not sure which month.

Hi ever one

Just my 2 cents here,

I use to work/play on a ROG G752 , but I switch to the MSI G73 VR. Its like night and day, cause I get still get the performance that I need but the GS is way lighter then the ROG and it still has a 17 inch screen which I think is essentially for what I do.

@ Scotty I know that you are on a budget but maybe save up for some a bit higher spec. Just my thoughts on the matter...
@ Dragonfist I would wait for the reviews on new the Intel Chipset, also if its coming next year its only a month away

Look on Amazon too, can often get laptops cheaper even with import fees than buying them locally - can also return it if any problems and amazon pay for that shipping.

The thing about gaming laptops is the tradeoff for the portability is huge. I mean, my laptop has a 980M. I worked out that it's around the same sort of performance of a desktop GTX 960 (A little better) and pretty much on par with an R9 380.

There is not really much room for the future with a 960M laptop. Unless of course you only play games that are far from demanding. If I were you, I'd try save for a laptop with a 1070, or at least a 1060.

It'll be 2-2.5k according to my calcs for the $870 one, excluding whatever clearance fees the courier will charge.

And do check that they'll use a courier and not the postal service or you can kiss it goodbye.

Hi Syber

How you feeling on your GS73VR? Is it good? I'm thinking on upgrading my current GS60 with either GS63VR or larger screen GS73VR. Let me know your experience with it thanks! :)

Hey guys,

Just to update here, I got a rog G552vw from evetech, I know why evetech? The price was right and has 2 year warranty. Service has been just fine this far. Although I had to send my own courier to collect as they were so slow.

Congrats, and happy gaming :D

One thing that irked me that I've sunk a lot of time in is trying to figure out is Nvidia Optimus and tearing with Windows 10. Read this for a splash of disappointment. If you see bad diagonal tearing, turn off V-sync and try run games in exclusive full screen if you have any issues.

Is this still an ongoing thing?

I ask, because when I got me a gaming laptop a bunch of years ago, I read about it and subsequently opted for a system without optimus.

Yeah it is. Got mine in March(ish) this year, and what a pain.
