Just because it's a 42 inch display or TV monitor he wants to game on, it doesn't mean he will be gaming in high resolution or high definition.

Usually 42 inches imply a plasma monitor. Unless he has a super expensive imported Hitachi model at 1920by1080 native resolution, he'll probably have a 1366 by 720 or prolly 1024 by 768. He'll need a card capable of DVI or HDMI
output - ie what the monitor can take, the rest should be ok as features
required for the actual games are usually more than overkill to display
on a huge monitor.

The max res, even if LCD, of a 42 inch monitor will be 1920by1080 btw.

If your friend bought a 30 inch computer display like those from Dell, Apple or HP, running at 2560 by 1600 then he'd need more powerful on-card processing power to run at that native resolution or he could run at 1280 by 800 and run the monitor at half resolution, image wouldn't be as sharp then.

Playing on a monitor that big doesnt help your game watsoever, prob makes it worse.
32" is about as far as i would go, but still you then sit up close and ruin your eyes faster.
19" --> 22" is perfect.

Bigger the res, more powerful card you require.

That's true, but a 42 inch monitor will have the res of a 19inch one,
just the pixels are bigger.

crap - mine has a better res than a 22".

R9000 is expensive for a full HD 42" ?

you "know-it-all" guys crack me up... :p

He said plasma .... 1080 full HD plasma are expensive and the majority of plasma's around are only 720 ;) 1080 LCD's are inexpensive.

If you get me a full HD plasma screen at R9,000.00 - drop me a PM!

I don't care if he says "Usually 42 inches imply a plasma monitor" because that's like saying "a 42 GB Hard drive usually means it's a Laptop Hard drive".

Also, the OP was talking about a 42" LCD.

You just didn't read correctly. The poster asked a question, I started explaining things in general and went on to spell out LCD vs plasma.
Plasmas in 42 inches are virtually all 720p or below. There are full HD
plasmas at 42 inches but rare and Hitachi was the company most
interested in producing them at this size and resolution, Panasonic
and Pioneer go for bigger at full HD. Anyway, he said 42 inches which is
a typical PLASMA resolution and not an LCD resolution. LCDs come
in 32 inches, 40 inches and 46 inches (and higher) but not
specifically 42. Hence I explained both concepts.

My 19 inch here is 1280 by 1024 which beats most 42 inch plasmas
out there. If you can run a game at that res on a 19 inch it will
run perfectly on 42 plasma or a 720p LCD. If you can run a game
on a 24 inch computer display (1920 by 1200) you will definately
be able to run on a full HD anything (even 107 inch Panasonic monster),
as full HD is only 1920by1080 (ie less).

If you're talking LCD, you're either gonna go 1280by720 or 1920by1080
and the former is still below 19inch standard resolution (1280by1024).
If you really want to game at a high resolution get a 30 inch computer
display running at 2560 by 1600 which is a 4 megapixel display, while a full
HD 42 inch gives you only 2 megapixels. You'll need double processing
power (CPU and GPU and texture RAM) to render a 3D game on a 30inch
computer display than a 42 inch TV (or a 72 inch LCD or even a 102 inch
LCD) as that's only 1920 by 1080.

To summarise:

Plasma Resolutions:
1024by728
1024by1024
1366by768
1920by1080

LCD TV or Monitor displays:
1280by720
1920by1080

Computer Displays:
1280by768
1280by1024
1440x900
1400by1050
1680by1050
1920by1200 .... (1)
2560by1600 .....(2)

As you can see (1) and (2) outperform full HD. However most of the other computer displays also outperform 720P.

The simplest answer is to look at the pixel res of the screen you want and not the size. Full HD LCDs
are only just over 2 megapixels, if your video system can power a 23/24 inch computer display, it
will handle the biggest LCD TV in the world.

what he said.

When I was a I.T tech this one client wanted a 32" 720P screen for his new gaming rig. Installed it and it sucked, eyes started to get sore within a few minutes of looking at it whilst playing so close up.

Get a 24" sammy they quite cheap nowdays.

True. Unless you're gaming across your lounge (console) get a computer display for your computer
(as said above by Brawler) and not a regular TV and put it 50cm from your
face, your eyes will hurt.

Even late last year, the guys in Incredible Corruption would point me to their 32 inch Samsung LCD (720P) when I asked them for 30 inch computer displays. Nowadays we can find 24 and 26 inches at affordable prices (R4999 to 5999) vs the R9000 they were last year.

I'm sorry but playing games on a 32+" screen is fine as long as you're not an idiot who sits 10cm away from the screen.

On a 24 inch and even on a 30 inch computer display - you CAN sit 10 cm
away from the screen - you know to focus on the detail of the 4 megapixel
picture in front of you, to say snipe someone or put a villager in a particular
spot. It works fine, but you need a display which is not too bright, has
great contrast for the brightness and is sharp enough. Don't put an LCD
TV on your desktop and expect that, but a 24, 26 or 30 inch computer
display instead. :)

I occasionally game on my 30 inch and its really gorgeous - its on a Mac
so not many games and I don't run Windoze but for serious gamers who
are thinking about making a big buy - forget the LCD TV, buy a 30 inch
Dell or HP monitor :).

if you wait a few minutes i'll upload a few pics of what it looks like to game on a 42" FullHD LCD.

Here's what to expect. the pics don't do it justice though (Crappy camera)

And what about playing on a 26" LCD TV? I know there's the Samsung T260, but the poor viewing angles make it terrible for watching movies on.

I had the same problem with the Computer LCD, color bleeding and color fading from angles, especially when i lie in bed and watch a movie from a lower angle - Weird colors!

Not with an LCD TV though, none of that ****.

a 26" LCD tv won't be good for playing pc games, its probably not even 720P.

Look we're not saying games don't look good on them, they do! I could hook up my bravia for my pc monitor but choose not to. Try do something else on that computer besides play a game or movie at a normal distance for a computer monitor.

Well actually most 26" LCD TV's are now 720P. Or at least those from the more well known brands. A PC monitor is nice, but viewing angles are crap, black light bleed can be insane (there have been enough threads regarding this problem), they often only come with a VGA, DVI and occasionally HDMI port, and the price of a good 24" is usually at least 6K. Not everyone only views their screen while directly sitting in front of it. And even at times, if you start slouching the view darkens. I mean WTH? You'd at least expect the screen to display a decent picture when you're an arms length away from it. This 160 degree vertical viewing angle that TN panels claim is more like 45degrees.
