Gaming PC prices

I'm looking for a decent gaming PC.
Preferably AMD Ryzen 5 but for under R10k. Would I better off with a Ryzen 3? I see there are 1 or 2 options, but I'm not sure about the places that are selling them.

Any suggestions? I just need a decent machine that can handle God of War, Skyrim, Atomic Heart (when it's out) etc.

Do you have any existing components you can use towards the build? If 'yes' list them in detail.
Do you need a monitor, keyboard & mouse?
Would you be willing to buy used components?
Any issues with getting certain components from amazon/newegg?

Isn't God of War a Playstation exclusive?
I wouldn't really know, it's my teen son who's the gamer.. he gives me a list, does his chores, makes his grades, and if appropriate, I deliver. The assumption was we were getting a PS4, but I'm more keen on a PC.

Get an entry level gaming PC that conforms to your budget - sell it next year this time and get a PS5.

Buying a PS4 makes no sense right now IMO unless you can get one for dirt cheap

A PC will always be a better choice than a console .
It will teach him basic computer skills and literacy at the very least that will carry into his Adulthood and job environment .
Try getting him into development and that PC could be something that sets him up for a very fruitful and always in demand career path .

Get someone like Wootware to prebuilt it for you .
I recently put together a machine for a family member at around the same budget .

I went for something like this as per screenshot.
I had to go for different motherboard as they didnt have stock of that specific one but pretty much what I went for .

Throw an RX 570 (which you can get for under R1500 secondhand) in there and you can play most titles on high presets @ 60fps 1080p.

My sentiments exactly. My daughter is entering her first year of Data Science next year. There aren't a lot of routes he can go, being an Aspie, but IT is something that would suit his personality totally.

Ps4 second hand market is quite strong. You won’t lose too much money buying a second hand ps4 and offloading it later.

No PC will play God of War, ever. It's PS4 exclusive.

As for the R10k budget, it will be difficult, but I think it can be done.

Assuming you already have a monitor, mouse and keyboard:

Thats ~R10 300.

Please note, I just threw stuff together. This is not the best you can do, nor do I know if the motherboard is actually any good. It is just to show more or less in which direction I would look.
A decent monitor, mouse and keyboard will be another R2k or so.

As for Ryzen 3, only if you don't have any other choice. It is still based on Ryzen 2000, and has onboard gfx which you don't want to use anyway.

Change the motherboard to

That will bring it under R10 000. Rather look at Carbonite for a second hand RX580 for that price, I mean a GFX card is easy to install.

For a budget gaming PC there's no reason to spend a ton of a CPU, so we can keep that low and put a bit more into the graphics card. How does this look?

That should do you fine and also leaves you with some upgrade paths :)

To be honest, I think the days of the 4c4t and 6c6t CPUs are numbered. There are already games that micro stutters on games like Far Cry 5 on CPUs with fewer than 8 threads.
That said, if the plan is to only keep the CPU for the next year or two, it's not a bad buy. You should be able to get a Ryzen 3600 for a bargain price this time next year.

The days of 4c/4t cpus for gaming are over, there are just too many games out that stutter & max out 4cores at 100% utilization.

For a R 10,000 budget you're not going to be maxing out the latest AAA titles. If the budget was larger I'd agree, but given the budget it's hard to recommend something higher without cutting corners elsewhere.

You don't have to max out a aaa game to throttle a 4c cpu. Anyways increasing the gfx settings usually lessens the cpu load and increases the gpu load.

Just note qualifier on that last paragraph, if it's an APU it's the same as 2nd gen, on the old process node afaik.

In regards to e.g. 2600 vs 3600, that's a good 20% performance increase in most games if CPU limited for average fps and some saw a 50% improvement in 0.1% drops, the single thread improvement for that gen was quite a bit due to how thread assignment works and the process node shrink.

It's why I'm hesitant to recommend an APU unless you're really struggling budget wise, with e.g. A 3600 you're not going to be upgrading for probably the next 3 if not 5 years if history is anything to go by. No, do not buy a 3600X, not worth.

Only thing you'll be upgrading is GPU and monitor at a way later stage maybe. The 1660 Super from Palit on wootware is also a pretty good price/performance ratio, just got it recently to replace my 280X.

No stock of those and woot has no eta for new stock.
Rebeltech maybe? Strange thing is I can add it to my basket though? Normally I can't add it if it's not in stock.
