No one is unaware of the advantages of owning standalone copies of games. But the opportunity cost is huge.

For example, Watch Dogs Legion is R1,199 by itself. Or you could pay €15 to enable Uplay+ for a month and finish the game in that time, with access to the most premium version of the game. Same applies to AC Valhalla. You could time your subscription to get both games in a single month.

And considering how sensitive most households are to cash flow, being able to Opex your game costs is a massive deal. In the US you can even include your Xbox console in the subscription - not sure if SA will see anything like that.

I do both service subscriptions and purchases. Mostly I only do subs to check out new titles, and then I acquire when it is on special in two years time. As I have said in another thread, when I have to compare my Steam library value, the worth at the lowest price are a 70% average discount. You can save a lot.

I've been down the discount path. My Steam library must be worth the GDP of a small country at this point. I have had a million times more fun with Game Pass. It's like switching to music streaming - you instantly have zero marginal cost to playing/trying out new games and broaden your horizons. Some of my most played games are ones I'd have never picked up at any price.
