Six policemen were critically wounded and bystanders were hit by stray bullets when robbers armed with AK-47 assault rifles opened fire during a store robbery in Bizana in the Eastern Cape, the SABC reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, police received a tip-off on Tuesday evening that a local Shoprite was being robbed. When the officers arrived, the gang opened fire.

The men were taken to the St Patrick Hospital in a critical condition.

The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Several people caught in the crossfire were injured by stray bullets.

Gangs running around with AK-47's. That's quite intense. They should be dealt with in a similar fashion.

I wish the police officers a speedy recovery.

Update :

Six police officers were wounded and Constable Manwabisi Gqamane, 25, died later in hospital.

A gang member was killed in the exchange of fire and another wounded.

Police recovered a 9mm pistol and three bags with an undisclosed amount of cash were found in a getaway vehicle.

A 38-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday night. A bag of coins and six firearms were recovered. Four of the firearms were stolen from the police officers who were shot.

I am not sure how police response works but in this violent country you'd think every suspected robbery should be treated with extreme care. Call in armoured vehicles, expect an ambush, etc. These cops drove straight into an ambush.

Not really, but something close enough and quicker to mobilise. The problem with the special task force (our swat) is that they take time to get there, not being in every province it seems.
So the locals must have the equipment to respond to armed robbers safely. Now you find them confronting AK 47'd cold blooded murderers with 9mms.
 
Now I'll bet if those bystanders had not been in possession of sharp-edged wrist watches, weighty cellphones, lance-like car keys and other potentially lethal objects on their persons then none of this would've happened! :rolleyes:

I think you need to pass a test before you get to shoot with an r4/5 rifle? Not sure but I know reservists have to.
 
Hope all innocents get well soon and that the robbers get caught.

This is a true testament on the lack of law in this country - Armed robbery would attract life with parole in 25yrs in most USA states, shooting whilst doing the robbery would attract life no parole in some states in the USA.

In SA they get free board and lodging till they want freedome or a max of 6-10 yrs parole after 1/3 served????

Unfortunately Bizana is an incredibly small town. The benefit thereof is that the police station is quite central (literally walking distance from everything), but I'm not surprised that bystanders were hit. Driving through that town's main road (between Kokstad & Port Edward) your car has to squeeze through people on the road. They're absolutely everywhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if Engcobo gets hit next. They have a similar setup. The Spar is right across the road from the SAPS office with absolute masses of people around.
 
I'd like to know how the robbers make their getaway... with all the traffic and pedestrians everywhere?

Well, South Africa 2011. Some will see the end of the year and some not. That's life. So sad. Look at Mexico. Its even worse. Crime happens everywhere. The Minister said murder rate has come down. Why worry? Do a YouTube search for Armed Robbery South Africa. I wish a speedy recovery to all involved.
 
How can this be? It was not legal weapons, or everyday goods and sporting items as descibed in the dangerous weapons bill that were killing people here , it seems as if genuine fully automatic unlicensed assault rifles were used in this crime.

Who would have thought?

You really want to arm our police force with high end weapons that randomly go missing? Although it doesn't come much better than an ak 47 for pure carnage.

How many weapons have the police lost(more like sold)?

This sounds rational. It depends on the ability of the SAPS to use equipment effectively and outwit criminal scum. I doubt they can do this.
