Four armed men walked into a garage in Mdantsane outside East London on Monday morning, brazenly robbing it of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Captain Leon Fortune said the robbery at Jekwa Garage occurred just after 7am when two men allegedly entered the garage and pretended to buy a cooldrink.

“When they reached the counter pretending to pay they drew pistols and held up four staff members who were in the store,” he said.

One of the staff members tried to run out of the store but he was stopped.

Fortune said two men were standing outside, one armed with an R4 rifle and the other with a knife.

An undisclosed amount of money was handed over to the robbers, who then fled in a Ford Bantam, with the car later being found abandoned in NU2.

sigh - R4 and a knife - does anyone else find that incongruent.

It's only fair that they start mentioning the race of these criminals; if that's what they do when he/she is white.

This was exactly what i mentioned in a previous thread...On the footage u can see they are black, but the media will only say "men"....if they were white, it would have read "white men"....Facts...check out your next murder/robbery event in the papers...Now if THIS isnt pushing it, then i dont know...Obviously there must be a reason for them not mentioning "black"...dont you think?

I'm not a racist, but I've seen more racism in the past 5 years, than before it was a 'new word' in most people's vocabulary. What happened 10 / 20 / 30 years ago is in the past, we can't change it. But why do we need to suffer for it now, cause someone thinks that the word racism can give him the power to do as he pleases?

Mass media is in the wrong with regards to the concerns pressed by Slooth and others. They know it too. It won't change easily as there are political pressures on the media that prevent them from saying BLACK men as easily as it is to say WHITE men...

It is a disparity that comes with the territory. It is wrong, but not much you can do to change it unless you make an appointment with SANEF and discuss it there...

It's not wrong to highlight the issue either; it down right wrong that they're doing it. Keeping silent is justification that it's correct. I refuse to suffer from White Guilt; I'll leave that to the previous generation. Further more I refuse to let my daugther grow up believing one evil is less then another.

Personally, I've seen less racism than before. What happened in the past will haunt us forever. We do not need to make the past an excuse for every silly present deed though! That's what frustrates me sometimes!

This event happened close to where my parents live. Mdantsane is such a relatively peaceful township than before. This is a shocker!

I think it frustrates us ALL. Especially when you try your utmost BEST to accept the current s*it we have to cope with, and then someone suddenly comes up with the past...and you must appologize for THIS and appologize for THAT.....BULL man

Less racism directed at your own race perhaps, but anti-white sentiment is certainly on the rise.

No, I said "less racism" because I mean black/white racism perhaps.

I grew up with a community including myself being "Anti-white". There are certainly people out there who still are but as far as I've observed, most people are happier now and have moved on.

That is very easy to say when you are not on the wrong end of certain government policies that aim to bring back the inequalities of the past.

I imagine white people under the previous government would have just as easily have said the same sort of thing while taking advantage of the policies of the time that they benefited from.

In my experience I've seen that while whites are too scared to bring race issues into a topic (even if it warrants it) for fear of being labeled racists, that blacks are increasingly more ready to accuse someone of being racist or bring race to an issue that does not warrant it.

I don't think that's unique to SA though, it seems to occur in most societies where there is an overwhelming majority and a 'main' minority. In the US, for example, they might state that the garage was held up by African American men.

The main reason, I think, is to induce anger among the majority thereby increasing their sales by invoking the impression among the majority that they're reporting the honest 'truth'. In the US, saying that there was a robbery by white men would stir a similar reaction from the majority as saying there was a robbery by black men here, resulting in the race card being played and bad publicity and declining sales.

I could be wrong though.

mmmm...Not because of fear, but the annoying re-repeat of "youre a racist"...No action comes about...just words. Instead of always the "youre a racist", how about "lets get our facts together and DO something about it"?

Media intends to sell and stirring is what gets things sold.

Perhaps, its very easy when you are frustrated to start making assumptions, thinking you know where I come from, my state of mind, because I'm Black.

I imagine white people under the previous government would have just as easily have said the same sort of thing while taking advantage of the policies of the time that they benefited from.

I don't want to imagine what white people would have said. I know what a few have said and/or done to me during that time and they do not represent the behavoir and views of "white" population.

Precisely. I honestly think that they couldn't give a hoot about racism, they just do whatever is necessary to protect their bottom line. Clearly racism is still an issue in SA (black, white, indian, coloured - it doesn't matter because there are racists among us all), but I don't think that this is what seemingly racist reporting is about, it's about sales figures.

Thank you for playing the race card and proving my point. I could just have easily made an assumption about someone of the same race as myself yet you believe it is because you are black.

You made an assumption that racism is on the decrease, I assume, based on your own experiences as a black, I assume again, non-racist you have not had much exposure to reverse-racism (government instituted or otherwise) as you are not subject to it which makes it easy for you to claim a decrease in racism in general.

I don't want to imagine what white people would have said. I know what a few have said and/or done to me during that time and they do not represent the behavoir and views of "white" population.
I know from experience with my own race that people who claim not to be racist are usually quite willing to take advantage of racist policies. I hate to burst your bubble but that type of person accounted for the majority of the white population during the apartheid years.
