Anyone use GPS' here and notice that it can't find streets/roads (whatever) that are clearly there?

I specifically own (for a month now) the Garmin Nuvi 2360 and this weekend I had to respond to a P1 call (2 of them) in the same area and my Garmin Nuvi 2360 couldn't find Arum Road or Grosvenor Road in Rondebosch.

Suffice to say, I also have a make book as a backup, in the index, those roads do not exist in Rondebosch, however, if you goto Rondebosch, look closely, you'll find the roads.

So... tell me now... do Garmin/Navteq just copy the map book or what because if they do, they do a kak job!

I logged a complaint to Garmin and this is their reply.

Thank you for taking your time in contacting us and informing us of the problems you are experiencing.

The Garmin Nuvi 2360LT is one of our newest introductions on the Garmin Automotive Products. This product is loaded with City Navigator South Africa NT. This map product is produced not by us, but by Navteq, which is supply to Garmin International.

We unfortunately do not have admission to this product to do any map corrections. But your may log your mapping errors on their website.

The link you can follow to do this is:

https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and once again thank you for your time and understanding in this matter.

Kind Regards

Team Garmin

Passing the buck?!?

Anyways, I went to the link and tried with both Mozilla Firefox 7.01 and Internet Explorer 9 and the page just loads and loads when I select my model GPS.

Garmin Nuvi 200

I could find those street names - Southern Africa TOPO 2012 NT

My luck, I had to go fetch a PC at Arum Road in Table View.
I couldn't find it on my Garmin GPS, but I could find it on my Nokia E71 (Ovi Maps) and also confirmed location on Streetmaps.co.za

I actually checked again when I was right there and took a photo.
The Garmin doesn't find it at all.

I know how to use a GPS!

There are "Arum Roads" but not the ones I want/in the areas I want them!

It was suggested that I contact Garmin (which I have) and if they don't bother to resolve the issue, I could demand a refund under the new CPA (the unit is ± 1 month old) if they can't find and fix the problem.

@Hemps; I am using the latest versions of the software - that is the first thing I did when I got the unit, I ran all possible updates!

Garmin have replied:

Hi,

We have spoken to Incredible Connection and they are happy to refund your money permit there are no physical damage, such as scratches, nicks and dents caused by accident, abuse, misuse to the device. All they ask if you could please take back the device to the branch at which you purchase it, - Incredible Connect V & A Waterfront.

Should Incredible Connection V & A Waterfront, have any queries on the return of your product, you may refer them to speak to any one of the following staff member at Garmin SA. Contact number 011 251 9999, Contact persons: Jaco Smit, or Johan De Bruyn.

Once again thank you for your time and co-operation in this matter.

Kind Regards

Team Garmin

I'm shocked to be honest.

No effort at all to try and resolve the issue... just 'take it back - get your money' (Sounds like a "We couldn't care less" attitude to me!)

I received this e-mail, I had to DM a guy on Twitter and he contacted me;

Hi,

I'm following your thread on mybroad and I hope that garmin sort you out, if they don't, please keep me informed along with details of the people who helped you because I can forward the details further up the chain at garmin and heads will roll.
It's not like garmin to just offer refunds, we like to think that people who buy our products are happy and if there are problems (such as you are having) that we find a way to fix them because if you are having the problem, who else might be having the problem.
I'm sorry bout your issues, I personally can't help you but ultimately, I might be able to get results for you if the people currently helping you don't come to the party.

Thanks!

garmap.co.za does the local maps - tell them. That said my 2010 map cannot find these roads.

I've registered on the forums and will post when they activate my account.
I've also joined the Garmin Facebook group and posted my query there as well contacted a few head okes via Twitter (who have accounts)

I'm on a mission!

For those who want to know exactly what is going on 'in a nutshell' in this thread.

I found roads on my GPS that are missing, they exist, but they do not come up when I search for them.
Specifically Arum Road in Rondebosch, Grosvenor Road in Rondebosch and strangely, Arum Road in Table View.
I can find them in the map book, but they also don't exist in the map book index, you literally have to look at the area to find them.
These are only 3... how many more... being a paramedic that uses the GPS to find addresses so I can get to patient quicker to treat them.
Now, next year, when the products 'map' updating service expires, do they honestly expect me to pay for a update when the current version doesn't even have existing roads?
And it's not like these roads magically popped up in the last year or so!

Take your money back they are offering and get a TomTom rather. Garmin is so overrated in this country for some reason.

Hi all,

Terence Edwords who is the National Technical Manager called me this morning and we chatted about the issue at hand.

He is going to send me another mapset from Garmap to try on the GPS.
I will also be sending him my 'trip log' information so he can hopefully sort out this issue of the roads being 'missing'

At least I'm getting some sort of help now!

What maps version do you currently have?

Topo
DEM
Street maps

I find Topo to be the best.

I had (according to my GPS);

myMaps: CN Southern Africa NT 2012.20 ALL

But last night, I (outta frustration) ran the Garmin updater and it updated it to "2012.30" then I rechecked for those roads and they still not there.

@Hemps;

How do I get Topo ? Is it something I can download or is it something I must buy?
If "Buy" then I refuse too, Garmin must sort that out, especially considering it's a new purchase.

This is why Tom Tom is awesome. If you find inaccuracies you can actually put the updates up for other people to download.

Ok, so a package arrived this morning from Garmin and apparently I need to install / use this 'memory card' (haven't opened the package yet) to install a new map set that will apparently fix all my problems.

Gdiza, I am looking at getting this Garmin. Saw your thread. Any news / updates on this? thanks

A mistake commonly made is that people are not quite sure in which suburb an address actually is. I could find both Arum Road and Grosvenor Road, but Arum Road is in Newlands, which is just on the border of Rondebosch, and Grosvenor Road I found in Plumstead, which also is just adjacent to Rondebosch. Not having the full addresses I am making assumptions on the locations, but I found them using Garmin CN Southern Africa 2012.2, CN Southern Africa 2012.3 and the latest Garmap 2011.3 Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps.

I still have endless issues with my Garmin.
I like to think I know how to search for addresses because I can find the places with my Nokia E71 no problem - the Garmin just has drama.

Arum Street in Newlands only appears on my Nuvi 710 if I specify the city as Newlands, while if I select "Search All (cities)" it doesn't find it.
As for Grosvenor, it doesn't find it in Plumstead or Rondebosch.

Hi

I have two Garmin Devices and have challenges finding streets with the newest device.

1. Nuvi 200W, Software ver. 2.90, GPS ver. 2.31b, South African Streetmaps 2008/03, bought it in 2008

2. Nuvi 2300, Software ver. 3.10, GPS ver. 2.70, with map CN Southern Africa NT 2011.31 All, bought in 2011

I have multiple times found that I could not on device 2 - Nuvi 2300, find some streets that I know exist, but hen would use device 1 - Nuvi 200W and find it no problem!

Here is one example. In Tzaneen there is a street called Aster Street. Easy to find on the Nuvi 200W but not on the Nuvi 2300.

How can I solve this problem? I have a business with two mobile teams servicing customers, but in some cases I cannot use the the Nuvi 2300 device and have to resort to Google maps on Smart Phones or ask people in the street!!

Appreciate any feedback
