Gas heater

I've got the Alva GH3100 which according to the specs uses 95.5g/hr, 191g/hr, and 286g/hr with one, two or three panels on respectively. We rarely use more than one panel, even during the winter.

damn, looks like i've missed out on the special today. that 1 of R299 would suffice for my needs. which other stores sell them at that price or closest to it. i like the idea that its compact and doe not use alot of electricity.

for what it's worth I bought the DeLonghi "Blue Flame" heater (similar to this one). Goes with a 9kg bottle and Builders have them going for 1499 (with thermostat). Hirsches rips you off for the same one at about 2k. DionWired has a 3-4.5kg AEG version (bought it also, but could not get any bottles). The backpanel is a bit flimsy, but it does the heater does it's job.

Got the Russell Hobbs. Should have just gone with the R400 cheaper Goldair tbh. Even looks better.

When I went to get the gas, the shop owner told me all these heaters basically come from the same factories (bar Delonghi) and that there is no difference between Goldair/RH/other brands.

Been using the Goldair over a year now and it's basic and it works.

I'm fortunate enough to work for a company that generate their own electricity. So we pay a set rate for electricity (R325) in the company house we stay in, which means gas is not an option for me.
But when I stayed in JHB the gas heaters used to give me a headache so I used to use my A/C and those wall mounted panel heaters to heat up the lounge. Bedrooms had electric blankets.
So today I use an electric bar heater with a fan and humdifier in the lounge. (Hi Fi Corp @R699)
An asbestos! heater in the room (those things chow power)
and a little fan heater in the bathroom...for the mornings.

How much extra a month would electric heaters be on your bill...I wonder.

Stevie G, on Victoria Road in Plumstead there is a guy who sells gas and gas appliances. His entrance is very close to being opposite the Plumstead Tennis Club (I think it's a tennis club). If you were coming down Dick Burton from the M5, you would take a right into Victoria road and he's about 50m down on the right. Has ones for R499. Cannisters seem cheap too, R170 for 9kg + gas. They also drop off new ones at your home.

Thanks PostmanPot
I think i know where that is. i have a 9kg cylinder already, just looking for a very cheap 1 to use it with. i will check it out this afternoon.

Hi PostmanPot
I went and bought a Safeway (Alva) at that place on Victoria Rd. paid R599 for it brand new. He says they all made at the same factory. The Safeway is the exact same model as the Russel Hobbs, SGH305 i think. The other brands like Goldair, Salton and Logik are inferior parts assembled. they all work, but the brand names lasts longer.

Is gas heaters not expensive to run

A 9kg lasts us about 4 to 6 weeks.
so about R180 for that time.

No electrical equipment (save possibly an aircon) work quite as well, the Gas is nicer than an aircon though in my opinion.

Are*

About a R170 9kg cannister on 1 bar will last 60+ hours or so. So call it R160 for 60 hours.

I've heard some people say it's cheaper and some say it's about the same. It warms up the room faster and is a "nicer" heat IMO. Also they will run independent of black/brown outs...

yeah, its much better and heats up the room very quick. i stay in a duplex. had the heater downstairs and it heated the whole place. when we went to bed upstairs it did not even feel cold. i got a 1800W heater from a guy in plumstead for 50 bucks. that things sucks the life out of our electric bill and i dies not heat the place like the gas heater. you have to stand or sit right next to it to feel the warmth.i'm not really a big fan of gas, but i cannot stand the bloody. it wins hands down.

i paid R170 to fill my 9kg. enjoy yours too PostmanPot
