Gas heater

Where would one get one I see Makro has them for about R600-00 would China City be cheaper?

thanks

I saw them too, but I dont know that brand, is it good or not? I'd rather pay more for something reliable.

Goldair? I think it is some Chinese make. You can also try Pick n Pay Hypermarket. They used to sell Salton ones.

I had the smaller salton one and it was crap. The fitting to the cylinder used a washer that kept getting damaged. Tried an alva one now with a more reliable bullnose fitting but having problems with it. Though I think it's is the cylinder being overfilled by builders warehouse and I lost the receipt.
So I made them give me a new alva heater and the ignition switch is faulty.
So going to return it now buy don't know what to get.

Electric ignition is a must and safety features to give you peace of mind is to be considered like: safety tip over switch, oxygen depletion sensor, and flame failure shut off. Worth the extra few bucks.

I have a Delonghi electric/gas combo with fans and another the Conti Euro90, both with the safety features.

Conti Euro 90

Simple, safe and silent operation
Piezo ignition system

Max Gas consumption 0.30 Kg/h

As I understand it these heaters have very strict building code regulations. My brother installed one and it works great but it had to be installed outside, and this and that had to be done, etc.

Just be 100% sure you aren't buying a piece of crap that isn't safe.

Hi guys

Had a look at the Goldair and not too happy with the quality and lack of features.

Saw Mega's suggestion of Delonghi, which I know is a good brand. Found this for R2,100 at Tafelberg, gonna pick one up - http://www.delonghi.co.nz/products/product_details.asp?Model=SRI2

Any thoughts?

Also, could anyone comment on these gas heaters depleting the air of oxygen? Is it necessary to run them with a window open? My gut tells me it's not necessary as I understand there to be tons of oxygen in a fairly large (7x7m) room.

Have used gas heaters plenty in the past, unless you're living in an airtight house I doubt they'll ever deplete enough oxygen to be a hazard :D

Stay away from the cheap brands like Goldair,Salton and Alva.Makro has a good Russel Hobbs for about R900.

Russell Hobbs is made by the same company as Salton. There's actually nothing wrong with the Salton and Alva models though.

You don't need any of the additional features, but if you're willing to spend the extra go for it.

What's the running cost of a gas-heater compared to conventional electrical ones - i.e. how many times do you have to replace gas? Is anyone using the Delonghi (from the pictures it appears that the gas-bottle fits into the unit at the back - or)?

No wonder RH quality went down.
It's nothing new. Russell Hobbs has come from that same company, and actually been manufactured in South Africa, for years. Maybe it was imported many years ago, but that has definitely not been the case for several years. My mom's Salton gas heater has been running for years with no issues, plus we've had plenty of other Salton products over the years and all were definitely good quality. If there has been a quality decline it is quite probably across all products from the same manufacturer.

I can't compare directly to electricity, but I find one 9kg cylinder lasts about three weeks when we're using every night, sometimes during the day on weekends. I pay about R150 per cylinder.

Ai I never trust gas, everytime when we use the gas braai I **** myself when putting it on :D
