A KwaZulu-Natal man thought to have ties to the killing of two police officers in a dramatic highway shootout near Modderfontein last week, was arrested on Sunday.

This follows a nationwide manhunt for suspects linked to the dramatic fire-fight which left two policemen dead and a third wounded.

News24 has learned that a joint operation between members of the police’s Special Task Force and various arms of the Crime Intelligence Unit led to the arrest of the 31-year-old suspect in a carefully orchestrated raid in Kranskop in central KwaZulu-Natal.

While details of the swoop remain unclear, two well-placed police sources, who could not be named as they are not authorised to speak to the press, confirmed that man was found in possession of an illegal pistol.

They detailed that the gun’s serial number matched that of one stolen during a robbery in Phoenix, north of Durban in 2012.

The sources revealed that the suspect has been previously linked to a robbery at Sun City in 2009, for which he was released on bail on charges of business robbery and attempted murder.

He has also been linked to a separate docket dating back to 2013, when he was allegedly charged for being in possession of an AK47, a .303 rifle and a pistol. Again, he was released on bail.

Last week’s shooting came after police officers pulled over a vehicle near the Edenvale off-ramp in Johannesburg when the occupants of the car opened fire.

Officials recovered a car believed to have been stolen as well as several firearms.

One suspect was arrested and is currently under police guard after he was wounded during the incident.

Police spokespeople could not be reached for comment at the time of publishing.

Would love to know the full story on this.... How does this guy get released on bail with a track record like that.

Taking the fall for someone higher up ;)

Bheki Cele was sufficiently powerful in the ANC that the only person he could have ever need to take the fall for would be numbuh one, but there's nothing in that deal suggesting the chief's involvement

Roux had clearly been doing corrupt deals with public works long before Bheki came along so who exactly would he have needed to protect? The people at public works were corrupt all along at nearly every level and none of with more clout than Cele who was pretty high up in the post Polokwane ANC.
