Gauteng's coming water problems

Sorry for the revive but seems relevant and not only so much for Gunteng but the entire country.

Did anyone watch e-news last night where they were going on about how "suddenly" now *shock horror* SA could be hitting a water crisis and that we could face paying up to 18 times as much as we currently do for water?

Nice little tax cash-cow this one, innit? I mean on the one hand you've got 18 x (what you now pay for water) = a ****load of money. On the other hand you've got 18 x 0 = 0! Works out nicely for everyone then!

But its not all gloom because the problem can be addressed through primary management processes which include decant risk analysis and hazard identification, water pumping and treatment

And who will do this? The ANC government (excuse me while I puke)?

ANC administration at its best!, hey lets hope therooster doesnt see this!
how long ago did the mines know about this?.... who is administrating Rand water, my guess is that the administration waited for everything to fall apart before they acted...
What exactly were they supposed to do? From a technical perspective there is fskall one can do about it. Sure they can kill the mining industry but the damage has been done already (Its a long term thing. Like 30y+) so that will only slow it down a bit. That pumping business the article is talking about screams unpractical. I doubt that throwing 5bn at that would even make a dent.

The BEE fat cats, and other shareholders, get to bail from the mines with all their money, and leave behind these problems for the SA taxpayer to fix.
Thats the way it works. Its even got a name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Externality

Has this been discussed here?
No, I don't think so. Its been in the news for a while though.

Just as an aside to this (even thought its an ancient thread).

I would not say "so many river systems flow out of Gauteng". Most of the coastal regions have their own river systems that are very seperate from the Gauteng region. This doesn't mean of course that AMD won't effect us, but hey... just get the factual reporting correct.

Maybe instead of constantly blaming the ANC, these greedy imperialists and capitalists should have thought about the damage to the environment mining poses before they start opening up mother earth so that her minerals can be exploited. Maybe back in the day these colonialists didn't think of the consequences of mining, but now things are different and information is available for these mining companies to tap into and minimize the damage done to the environment. But the popular thing to say in this forum it seems is to blame the ANC, as if the apartheid government put measures in place to combat poisoning the environment.

Lol @ the dumbasses who blame the ANC for this. Show's their own intelligence level.

Doesn't Gauteng get the majority of it's water from the Sterkfontein, Lesotho Highlands and Vaal dams? Outside of the mining region?
