Gautrain bus drivers on strike

Just using your logic here - we should stop construction because people are getting around fine as it is, why make their lives easier by building new routes and adding more highway lanes?

So if people are not using buses because there are no stations and no buses that will take them to their destination, does that mean we should just not care to add more? Can you imagine if people shared a similar thought process when constructing and expanding underground rail networks in the rest of the world?

Same predicament here. I live about 3km's from the Rosebank station and the Rhodesfield station is about 5km from work so no buses, no gautrain for me...

So what are you going to do? Do you walk the 2km to the busstop? What if it is raining? What if you find out there is a strike when at the busstop? Or do you think they should follow Mike's idea and have busstop outside your house. That would really be convenient. Everyone has a busstop.

I cant do anything now since this was my testing day and till my colleague finds another job its worthwhile to drive to work since she gives me some petrol money.

Yes, I'll walk the 2km to the busstop (get some exercise while I'm at it), and if it rains I'll take a rainsuit or umbrella. Luckely i heard there will be a busstrike on the internet, though news24 was very slow in headlining it.

They should just fire all the workers from the unprotected strike and get new ones.

And yes, they should expand the feeder network further east into Pretoria or build a rail to (and a station at) Menlyn and have feeder buses to it. Most of the traffic on the N1 to midrand and JHB are from central PTA and PTA East.

My logic? I think you need to go back and check.

It is your logic that is flawed. Seeing as you've brought roads into the conversation, what you are saying that that people don't go to Postmasburg because there isn't a six-lane highway there. And by building such a route would make it the destination of choice.

As to the underground or metros of the rest of the world. Primarily they had to go underground because there was no room on the surface (or the even went up in some places). Never mind dealing with the noise and mess made by the steam tech used way back when. In most cities it provided a means to get around the city. We don't have that. Oh, we're supposed to have a BRT system (also on strike). But that doesn't seem to be going to well either.

Expansion of the undergrounds was into some areas and should not be confused as a total replacement for other means of transport. British Rail links up with the tube at certain stations. But there isn't a Tube bus service. Nope - alternative means of transport are provided by a number of other players operating around hubs. We don't seem to get that here because some people think that they should control it. Why are there Gautrain buses? There is enough other capacity being used inefficiently (or on strike)

I tried to test it earlier this year. There is a busstop about 500m from my front gate. I got dropped off at Sandton because parking for more than a day gets stupid - took train to airport and flew off. Came back a few days later and was going to do it on my own. Was back at Sandton around 3.30 in the afternoon and wne tot find the bus. Buses aren't running on weekends.

Thank goodness for cell phones

More buses not working wouldn't have helped either.

Because the municipal bus services in JHB and PTA are a mess because those municiplalities can't even run a proper billing system and never seem to update their routes or get expanded to new areas.

I believe that someone tried the folding bicycle. Not sure how successful because the Gautrain people get odd when it comes to using the train and what you can take on it.

Yet we assume a new bus service will work?

And I have already seen a Gaubus stuck on the side of Rivonia Road with it's hood up - or whatever you'd call the flappy thing at the back

Yes, it will work better overall, cause its not run by a ANC municipality but a private business.
